Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled work in the operation of a variety of heavy automotive and related equipment. Employee in this class is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy automotive and related equipment used in construction and maintenance activities. The operation of this equipment frequently entails considerable manipulative difficulty, and considerable importance is attached to the ability to effectively perform specialized tasks for which equipment is designed. Normally work is performed on one specified type of equipment, though employee is required to operate other units or perform semi-skilled laboring tasks during slack or seasonal period. The major work responsibilities may include: drives and operates heavy weight dump trucks and lowboy tractor trailers; operates dozers, motor graders, trash compactors, elevated earth mover scrapers, excavators, backhoes, and front end loaders; services and performs basic preventive maintenance checks; and performs manual labor work as required. Employee reports to the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent and/or the Solid Waste Superintendent.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This class is distinguished from Heavy Equipment Operator I in that the Heavy Equipment Operator II classification requires more skill in operating and maneuvering power-driven equipment in completing tasks. This class is distinguished from Construction Equipment Operator in that Heavy Equipment Operator IIs do not supervise subordinate employees in the absence of the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent. The Construction Equipment Operator classification also requires more skill in operating construction and maintenance equipment.
Two years of experience and/or training that include operation of heavy equipment such as a dozer, motor grader, dump truck, trash compactor, earth mover scraper, excavator, backhoe, lowboy tractor trailer and front-end loader in public works, utilities, construction or a related field. Must possess at least aClass B Commercial Driver’s License.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Must obtain and maintain ADEM Certified Landfill Operator Certification within four years of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and overtime as needed to perform job duties.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to lift 50-75 pounds, assisted as needed to pick up equipment parts, a fusion welder, air wrench and to change tires. Physical ability to work outdoors as needed to operate equipment from an open or enclosed cab while being exposed to extreme conditions (hot and cold temperatures, rain, dust and dirt). Physical ability to sit for extended periods of time (up to eight hours) in order to operate heavy equipment as well as physical ability to stand, stoop, bend or kneel for periods of time to inspect equipment or perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
