City of Mobile Fire Rescue Department is Hiring a Firefighter Near Mobile, AL

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Ability to learn department rules and regulations; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to learn a variety of firefighting duties and methods, including the operation of firefighting equipment; ability to learn first-aid; ability to perform prolonged manual work under adverse conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Description

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) At the scenes of fires, lays and connects hose, holds nozzles and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders and uses chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment; performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers over furniture and removing excess water and debris; administers first-aid to injured persons; may serve in the capacity of a Firefighter-Driver as needed; participates in fire drills and attends classes in firefighting, first-aid and related subjects; performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the Fire Department property such as hanging and drying hose, cleaning and polishing apparatus and making minor repairs to various equipment; inspects buildings and premises for compliance with fire laws, checks on complaints and aids in the investigation of arson cases when assigned to fire prevention activities; inspects commercial and noncommercial buildings in order to detect fire and safety hazards and to become familiar with structures within assigned districts; cleans storage and utility areas, cuts grass, rakes lawn, cleans and washes down parking areas; studies the latest techniques in fire suppression and fire prevention; assists in rescue operations at fires and other situations; when properly licensed, may serve in the capacity of a Firemedic as needed; exercises to keep in good physical condition; performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities, often performed under conditions which require strenuous physical exertion. Considerable time is spent in the special and routine maintenance of equipment and apparatus and in the routine care of buildings and grounds. Work is performed under close supervision of a Fire Service Captain. Significant work hazards related to personal injury and stress exist with this work. An employee in this class may work in excess of ten hours overtime per month.
