Purpose

The Civil Engineer prepares engineering designs and plansand performs construction review and/or inspection in one or more of thefollowing areas:sewer and environmental engineering; water engineering;street, highway and transportation engineering; traffic engineering; andstructural engineering.

Eligible candidates who successfully complete the selectionprocess will be placed on the highest-level eligible list for which theyqualify.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare engineering designs and plans using design software and drawing tools, such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Civil 3D.
  • Ensure engineering activities are compliant withenvironmental, safety and other governmental regulations.
  • Inspect project sites to monitor progress and to ensure conformance to design specifications.
  • Estimate quantities and cost of materials, equipment, and labor, and prepare cost estimates.
  • Review and prepare responses to plans, correspondence, and legislative initiatives.
  • Provide technical advice regarding design, construction, or program modifications and structural repairs.
  • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographical or geological data to plan projects.
  • Prepare contract documents.
  • Coordinate design and construction activities.

Minimum Requirements

Both Civil Engineer I & Civil Engineer II levels:

1. Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a schoolaccredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

2. Ability to travel independently throughout Milwaukee, eitherby transit, bicycle, or automobile.

Civil Engineer II

3. One year of professional civil engineering experienceperforming functions related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology.
  • Knowledge of mathematics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and the ability to make accurate calculations.
  • Knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, and their interrelationships and application to understanding fluid dynamics.
  • Ability to prepare engineering plans using design software and drawing tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation and/or Civil 3D.
  • Skill in the use of computer software such as Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and technical materials.

Communication and Interpersonal

  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary staff,the public, various City of Milwaukee officials, and other agencies.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization as well as work courteously, cooperatively, and effectively with people whose backgrounds may differ from one's own.
  • Written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports.

Current Salary

Civil Engineer I

The current salary range (Pay Range 2JN) is$74,027-$92,612annually,and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis$76,248-$95,390. Appointment above the minimum is possible based uponlevel of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

Civil Engineer II

The current salary range (Pay Range 2KN) is$79,209-$98,704annuallyand the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis$81,586-$101,665. Appointment above the minimum is possible based uponlevel of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

In accordance with the City of Milwaukee Salary Ordinance,an employee with a Professional Engineer License will be paid an additional 3%.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESSwillbe job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluationof education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a writtenor performance test, a structured interview or other assessment methods. TheDepartment of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the mostqualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations.Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection processcomponent weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
