THE POSITION: Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the operation and care of a one-man refuse collection truck, performs related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Drives and operates the truck in the performance of collecting and placing various types of refuse into the collection truck and the safe operation of the packing and unloading mechanism; follows established routes and maintains a schedule in the collection of solid waste; reports refuse collection regulation violations to supervision; makes special runs in attending to complaints; performs related tasks on equipment such as refueling, daily maintenance, service including but not limited to lubrication, washing and safety checks, and as directed assists mechanics and servicemen in making minor repairs and changing tires. As required and directed performs tasks and duties normally performed by employees of equivalent or lower classification.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and Training
Graduation from high school or the General Educational Development Test (G.E.D.) equivalent.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to operate the assigned equipment. Sufficient knowledge of equipment to detect and report needed repairs. Some knowledge of the principles of the operation of packer type refuse collection trucks. Ability to exercise caution, good judgment and control when operating in congested vehicle and pedestrian traffic situations. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to cooperate and work satisfactorily with other employees. Some knowledge of street locations within the City. Ability to meet and deal with the general public using tact and diplomacy. Possession of a valid State motor vehicle operator's license with a satisfactory driving record.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess, upon appointment, a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License.
