Workday/Shifts and Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (some weekends/evenings)

Summary/Objective
The Education Supervisor develops and implements education programs and events for the Flint Hills Discovery Center with a strong focus on K-12 school age and family audiences. The incumbent provides expertise in areas of curriculum development, classroom management, and resource interpretation, creates an inclusive learning environment for audiences of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, and also assumes primary responsibility for the training, supervision, and evaluation of the Seasonal Educator staff.
Essential Functions
Develops, coordinates, and implements educational programs and events.
  • Develops and implements a variety of education programs and events for audiences of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Incorporates K-12 curriculum standards, contemporary learning theories, and resource interpretation best practices as necessary to ensure high level of guest satisfaction.
  • Plans, anticipates, evaluates, and assesses necessary resources for education programs and events. Ensures resources are utilized efficiently according to established timeframes and sets budget and revenue expectations.
  • Maintains knowledge and proficiency with Flint Hills science, history, and culture topics as well as education and curriculum standards through ongoing professional development.
  • Assists the Curator of Education with long-term education program planning, exhibit development, budget development, and event management.
  • Maintains a safe and inclusive environment at all education programs following written policy and protocol.
  • Manages guest-centered education resources and interpretive activities including the Prairie Kidscape exhibit space, hands-on programs, scavenger hunts, virtual tours, and other self-guided resources.
  • Incorporates emerging technologies and educational tools into programming.
  • Coordinates the education team's use of multiple databases and online resources including CivicRec, Volgistics, SurveyMonkey, etc.
  • Knowledge of Flint Hills native animal species. Assist in the management and implementation of the Flint Hills Native Animal Exhibit including live animal programs and animal care/upkeep.
Supervises and trains various volunteer staff, educational interns, and seasonal educators.
  • Directly supervise Seasonal Educator and Education Intern staff including scheduling, training, and evaluation
  • Assesses the training needs of interpretive volunteers in partnership with the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Develops and implement training resources and classes for volunteers and staff.
  • Assist the Curator of Education in the overall recruitment and retention of Seasonal Educator and Education Intern staff.
  • Hires and trains staff members, as needed.
  • Provides supervision and oversight of applicable staff.
  • Coordinates schedules of applicable staff.
  • Administers City of Manhattan Policies and Procedures in a consistent manner.
  • Ensures employees supervised demonstrate productivity, competence, and high morale, as well as utilize employees' skills and abilities.
  • Conducts performance planning and evaluations for employees in a timely manner, to include development of goals, objectives, and deadlines.
  • Resolves routine personnel issues or problems.
  • Leads and manages staff with clear and consistent communications.
Performs additional duties as required.
  • Attends meetings and training.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Manages unpleasant interactions and stress caused by irate and/or defensive customers.
  • Performs various administrative duties related to event and public experiences.
  • Assists the Curator of Education with development and execution of grant funded education program opportunities.
  • Ensures compliancy with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures in all duties.
  • Performs on-call duties as required.

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Museums Studies, Early Childhood Education or similar content field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in informal or formal education settings.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as meeting the minimum qualifications
  • Valid driver's license
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Kansas Teaching License.
  • Two (2) years of experience in K-12 classroom instruction, classroom management, and curriculum standards.
  • Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG).
  • Prior supervisory experience.
