City of Maitland is Hiring a BUILDING INSPECTOR (COMBINED) Near Maitland, FL

The job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and employee and is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change.
Performs a variety of routine and complex work in the interpretation and enforcement of adopted codes, related rules and regulations.
This is highly skilled technical building and/or fire inspection work. The position incumbent inspects new and modified commercial and residential structures and construction sites to enforce state statutes, federal codes, adopted model and city ordinances relating to building structures, electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems as certified. May perform fire prevention inspections and enforce applicable codes and ordinances. May perform plans examining functions for areas of expertise where appropriate certifications are possessed.
Work is performed with considerable independence and under the general supervision of the Community Development Director, or assigned designee.
This position is considered an emergency/disaster position. During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation, which requires that the employee be ready, willing, and able to report to work during emergencies and/or disasters of any kind, notwithstanding any other commitments the employee may have and be able perform emergency services duties, as assigned.Reviews building permit plans and conducts scheduled inspections in all disciplines licensed to ensure compliance with the application local, State and federal regulations including, but not limited to, building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and accessibility, energy calculations and similar data.
Responds to requests and makes site inspections at various stages of construction or modification to ensure compliance.
Documents permit inspection results, communicates inspection findings to contractors, and records inspection results in the Building Division’s electronic files. Researches codes to respond to questions and resolve related problems.
Signs off on final inspections, and confirms final approval of job completion for release of a Certificate of Occupancy or Certificate of Completion, as applicable. Makes random observations within city limits to determine if construction projects are operating under approved permits and ensures services are being provided by licensed contractors.
Investigates as directed complaints in order to enforce codes and report irregularities to supervisor. Issues violation notices and stop work orders as required enforcing codes. Investigates complaints of violation of city codes relating to building and construction activities.
Schedules and conducts fire safety inspections and reinspection of buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire code requirements, including inspection for certificates of occupancy and existing occupancies and fire protection systems and devices such as sprinkler systems, portable fire extinguisher, heat detectors and smoke detectors, as certified and authorized by law.
Orders correction, remedies of hazardous conditions, investigates, and reports on complaints received regarding hazardous conditions or practices.
Periodically patrols or inspects an assigned area to monitor for violations of local codes. Responds to complaints of potential code violations relating to State and local building codes, or other code related matters.
Enters results into Division records related to inspection and enforcement activities. Assists in obtaining, preparing or presenting exhibits or other evidence to the Code Enforcement Board and court as required.
Assists in plans examination as certifications allow.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Serves as a member of various committees.
Completes forms, writes reports and assists in developing plans for special assignments.
Explains, interprets, and provides guidance regarding all applicable codes within area of responsibility.
Supports the code enforcement function by regularly picking up illegal signs and occasionally conducting field investigations of potential violations, gathering evidence and submitting information to the Code Enforcement Specialist.
Performs other duties as assigned.Extensive knowledge of: 1) minimum building and general construction codes, and skill in applying knowledge of minimum building codes; 2) modern fire prevention principles, procedures, techniques and equipment; 3) building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and fire codes; and 4) inspection techniques. Working knowledge of fire suppression techniques and equipment.
Ability to work well with co-workers, the public and with local contractors; ability to read and understand complicated plans and blueprints; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Some knowledge of code enforcement principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting; working knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations relating to various land use, nuisance and public safety codes; working knowledge of inspection techniques.
Ability to prepare, organize and maintain inspection field data, reports and systems.
Ability to analyze complex situations, problems and data, and use sound judgment in drawing conclusions and making decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, employees, supervisors and the general public to include the ability to handle stressful situations and effectively deal with difficult or angry people.High school graduate or equivalent. Position may qualify at two levels, as follows:
Inspector I:
A minimum of one Standard Inspectors Certification through Florida Statute 468 from the list below at time of hire. If an internal employee, who is an Inspector Trainee receives a Standard or Provisional Certification they will be promoted to an Inspector I.

Possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's license.
Inspector Combined:
A minimum of two Standard Inspectors Certifications. If an internal employee who is an Inspector I and has at least one Standard and receives an additional Standard or Provisional Certification, they will be promoted to an Inspector Combined.

In addition, possess or be able to obtain additional certifications through the State of Florida, within the time frame outlined in a written agreement between the applicant and the Department Director, or his designee.
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's license.
Must also possess the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-700 within 30 days of employment and the ICS-100 and ICS-200 within 90 days of employment. There may be additional NIMS required, which will be scheduled by your Supervisor.
Special Note:
Should the employee not maintain current standard or provisional certifications, the add pay incentive that the employee is receiving for that certificate will be discontinued until such time the employee has been reissued a standard or provisional certification.
