CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
CLASSIFICATION TITLE: METER READER
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to read, connect, and disconnect water and electric meters for billing purposes. Employees in this classification read and re-read meters; assists with service orders; and cleans and pumps out water meter boxes as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Reads and/or re-reads meters; keys in readings in a handheld computer.
Completes meter check request; notifies customers of leaks and high usage.
Informs office of meters needing service; provides office with other information, comments of hazards, or service statistics.
Performs temporary service shut-offs at customer request.
Cleans and/or pumps out meters or boxes; assists with changing electric and water meters; assists with meter repairs.
Schedules maintenance and maintains cleanliness of City vehicle.
Operates a handheld computer, motor vehicle, monocular, scope, hand tools, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Delivers parts or supplies as needed.
Assists with cleaning grounds and building.
Takes calls and messages in office as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; no previous work experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky driver’s license.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, animals, wildlife, temperature extremes, electric currents, or traffic hazards.
