GENERAL INFORMATION:
Division: Planning & Code Enforcement
Barg. Unit: MSEA- Maine Service Employees Association
Status: Full-Time 37.5 hours/week
Grade: 25 [$29.66 - $39.83/hour]
SUMMARY: Primary duties include, but are not limited to, the inspection and enforcement of codes related to housing, land use and zoning.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: College degree in building technology, public administration or planning; or equivalent combination of education and experience in building construction, zoning, land use or inspection work. Must already possess or have the ability to obtain the following certifications/credentials within 12 months of employment: State of Maine Code Enforcement Officer, Maine Local Plumbing Inspector, MUBEC certification. Experience with State of Maine DEP, HUD and EPA regulations, including the ability to identify risks associated with lead paint is strongly preferred.
Must possess a valid, State of Maine driver’s license in good standing and have a reliable vehicle for work use. Strong organizational and effective communication skills, along with the ability to track and follow multiple pieces of information through to completion.
WORK ACTIVITIES: Inspects existing housing, commercial buildings, and properties to ensure compliance with required standards for safety and health. Issues orders regarding ordinance violations (including but not limited to land use, building, internal plumbing and subsurface wastewater disposal, property maintenance). Prepares documents for legal action. Interprets and explains laws and ordinances. Establishes effective working relationships with owners, tenants, property managers, City officials and others, at times under adverse or strained conditions. Performs other duties as assigned.
