City of Lancaster is Hiring an Utility Operator Near PA, PA

Note: Schedule is Wednesday-Sunday; 7:00AM - 3:30 PM. (Mondays and Tuesdays off).
Responsible for the operation of mowers, small dump trucks, tractors, and related automotive equipment and, occasionally, heavy equipment; performs large and small animal care related to the Petting Farm operation; performs manual labor as assigned and may supervise employees assigned as helpers.

Follows safe practices in the performance of duties.
Performs related manual labor work in all park and grounds maintenance activities, including but not limited to mowing, pruning of shrubs and trees, turf management, leaf collection, and snow removal.
Operates light automotive vehicles, dump trucks, skid loaders, utility task vehicles, riding mowing tractors, and other power-driven equipment that are less than 26,000 GVW.
Assists in the care of livestock and other animals contained within the Long’s Park Petting Farm, including but not limited to feeding, disposal of animal waste, cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures, and aiding animal care professionals, e.g. veterinarians, farriers, etc.
Maintains park infrastructure, including but not limited to grills, picnic tables, fencing, benches, and signage.
Performs basic custodial upkeep of pavilions and restrooms.
Hauls soil, sand, mulch, debris, manure, or other materials.
Operates a truck-mounted snowplow and other snow removal equipment.
Assists with maintenance and repair of rain gardens, wetlands, and storm water projects.
Assists in the setup and cleanup of major park events, including the annual summer concert series.

Education, Training, and Experience

Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.
One (1) year experience in the operation of motorized landscaping equipment is required.
Experience in animal care and stewardship is preferred.

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a current valid PA driver’s license is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of safe practices related to Public Works.
Knowledge of the operation of specialized mowing equipment and parks and grounds maintenance equipment is required.
Comfort with and ability to perform work around large and small animals, including llamas, donkeys, goats, pigs, and various fowl.
Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in operating equipment is required.
Some knowledge of the geography of the City is highly desirable.
Ability to make minor repairs, adjustments and service to operating equipment.
Ability to operate a vehicle on private and public streets is required.
Proven ability to work well under pressure and to maintain positive interactions is required.
Positive interpersonal skills are required.
Proven ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment is required.
Proven ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English is required.
Ability to comprehend written and/or oral instructions.

EnvironmentalConditions

Outdoor, exposed to inclement weather and extreme temperature.
Exposure to noise, dust, exhaust, and pollution.
Work may be occasionally performed around moving equipment and on/adjacent to roadways with active traffic.
Work may be occasionally performed in wet and marshy areas.
Exposure to animal urine, feces, and other bodily fluids as well as dust and debris typical of outdoor animal enclosures.

Safety Equipment Used or Needed

Personal Protective Equipment such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, rain gear, steel-toed safety shoes, rain boots, and respirators.

Comments

Requires standing, bending, walking and sitting, and climbing in the performance of duties up to eight (8) or more hours a day.
Works around motorized or moving equipment and machinery.
Requires working long hours and must be available to handle emergency situations after hours, weekends, and holidays.
Requires heavy manual lifting up to 80 lbs.
Requires the use of hand tools for shoveling and sweeping.
Requires the use of air tools, hydraulic tools, and/or electric tools such as jackhammers, pavement saws, and tampers.
Requires performance of duties occasionally under unfavorable weather conditions.
