The Position

Part-time summer Certified Lifeguard position at the Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation Swim Park: a public, lakeside facility. The L.O. Parks & Recreation Swim Park is open seven days per week July 1 - August 31, 2024, 1:00 - 6:00pm. Typical shifts are 12:45pm- 6:15pm. On-line application, completed supplemental questions and proof of lifeguard certification required to be considered for this position.
Candidates must be a minimum age of 16 by July 1, 2024, and have availability in July and/or August with weekday &/or weekend availability. Staff Training late June.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create a safe environment for all Swim Park patrons, both swimmers and other guests, maintaining constant surveillance of patrons in the facility.
  • Perform rescues and administer emergency care and assessment as trained and as necessary.
  • Initiate or participate in a coordinated, team approach to preventing and managing incidents.
  • Assist in day-to-day facility operations, such as: equipment safety check, opening and closing of facility, cleaning and sanitizing and keeping attendance records.
  • Respond positively to correction and accepting direction.
  • Follow staff policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance of policies and procedures by patrons.
  • Perform custodial maintenance duties for swim and park areas, including cleaning of bathrooms.
  • Initiate and excel at customer service. Present yourself professionally and interact professionally with customers, staff and general public at all times.

Education and Experience Requirements

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Current Lifesaving/Lifeguard certification from a nationally or regionally recognized and approved organization. (For example, American Red Cross or YMCA)
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification for the professional rescuer.
  • Minimum Age: 16 (by July 1, 2024)
PHYSICAL & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience supervising youth in recreation or aquatics setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and efficiently in English (verbal & written).
  • Must wear required uniform when on shift.
  • Ability to work outdoors exposed to environmental elements (i.e. direct sunlight with hot or cool temperatures).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in lifeguard/lifesaving skills in pre-season training and audits throughout summer.
  • Physical exertion required, including, but not limited to swimming, lifting, climbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, reaching and safely walking on wet deck surfaces. Requires standing and/or sitting for extended length of time. Requires repetitive foot, arm, shoulder, hand movement, hearing and seeing. Exposure to environmental elements (i.e. direct sunlight with hot or cool temperatures).
