City of La Crosse is Hiring a GIS/Survey Intern Near La Crosse, WI

Description

The City of La Crosse Engineering & Public Works Department is looking for a GIS/Survey Intern to gather field data, update and create records and mapping within the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS), and help manage databases for sidewalk, streetlighting, traffic signal, and fiber optic infrastructure. Potential to work part-time or full-time, with pay determined by year of school (up to $15/hr).

The Engineering & Public Works Department is charged with designing, installing, and managing various infrastructure throughout the City of La Crosse. Staff gather data in the field using land surveying equipment and methods, compile and analyze in CAD, and manage the information in GIS. The Department inspects and maintains approximately three hundred miles of sidewalk, two thousand street light and signal poles, and one hundred miles of electrical and/or fiber optic lines in the public Right-of-Way.

Responsibilities
  • Gather field data with Survey and GPS equipment
  • Observe and inspect sidewalks and curb ramps
  • Measure infrastructure and compile data for official records
  • Perform digital data conversion and gather map feature attributes; Update database and mapping records
  • Provide user and technical support under the direction of Civil Engineers and Sidewalk & ADA Technician
  • Assist other departments with GIS update and management
  • Work in team environment with department personnel
Qualifications
  • Pursuing a four-year, associate, or graduate degree in GIS, Geography, Surveying, Engineering, or related field, with at least introductory education or experience in said field; current or graduate student preferred
  • Working knowledge of GPS/GIS concepts, principles, and equipment
  • Ability to perform data creation and conversion in GIS
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Adept in research & analysis
  • Strong communication & interpersonal skills
  • Responsible, organized, punctual, attentive to detail, and self-motivated
