Job Summary

Park Maintenance: Performs tasks related to the maintenance and preparation of pavilions, restrooms, and other park amenities, including trash collection and removal. Performs tasks related to the maintenance and safety of playgrounds. Performs tasks related to the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields for practices and games.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Arrives at work on time prepared to work the assigned schedule.
  2. Works overtime as needed.
  3. Operates motorized equipment such as tractors with attachments, top dressers, aerators, paint sprayers, and other related maintenance and landscape equipment.
  4. Perform preventative inspections and maintenance on equipment as assigned; complete reports as required.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.
  6. Adheres to Hurst’s Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
  7. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical and appropriate.
  8. Regular and timely attendance is required for this position.
  9. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and others during daily work.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of safety rules, City rules, codes, and proper use of safety equipment.
  • Continuing ability to work any day of the week (weekends and weekdays) and long hours.
  • Basic knowledge of repair and maintenance of facilities such as restrooms, fountains, lighting systems, fences, playground equipment, and pools.
  • Basic knowledge of landscaping and plant materials.
  • Basic knowledge of irrigation and irrigation repair.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to work cooperatively with co-workers.

Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. 
  • Previous work experience in manual labor activities is preferred.
  • Candidate must have a personal electronic device capable of making and receiving phone calls and sending and receiving text messages. The City incorporates reimbursement for the business usage of the personal electronic device into the hourly rate.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
  • Must have regular and punctual attendance, reliable transportation, and flexibility to work overtime and weekends.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and essential job function screening.

Upon successfully completing the initial probationary period, the Entry Level Park Maintenance Worker will be reclassified to a Park Maintenance Worker I. Failure to successfully complete the initial probationary period will result in termination of employment.

This job entails moderate physical labor, which requires strength and agility. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit or smell. The employee must occasionally lift, shovel, and carry up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Majority of work is performed outdoors and is subject to extreme heat and sun or inclement weather.
