City of High Point is Hiring a Parks Maintenance Crew Supervisor Near High Point, NC

The Parks Maintenance Supervisor performs difficult skilled and responsible technical work supervising and participating in the work of a park maintenance crew; does related work as required. Work schedule may include nights, weekends and holidays.
 
 Work is performed under the general supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor and work guidance is provided to assigned work crews.
  • Plans, schedules, trains, organizes and supervises the work of small crews in the daily operations of park maintenance activities;
  • Prepares and maintains daily work reports;
  • Trains new workers in the safe operation of tools and equipment;
  • Supervises and participates in the park maintenance, repair, installation and construction work;
  • Inspects and maintains outdoor courts;
  • Coordinates the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields;
  • Mows, trims, cleans and maintains park areas using specialized equipment such as tractors with attachments, reel mowers, pickup trucks with trailers, heavy dump trucks, backhoes, tractor-loaders, chippers, chain saws, riding mowers, airless paint sprayers and other related equipment;
  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions;
  • Makes and adjusts work assignments;
  • Requisitions necessary equipment and materials;
  • Applies pesticides and herbicides as needed to maintain healthy and attractive grounds;
  • Cuts down and removes dead trees and shrubs and weeds flower beds;
  • Prunes, mulches and plants trees and shrubs;
  • Grades, seeds, fertilizes, waters and sods turf areas;
  • Installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems;
  • Prepares simple work reports;
  • Trains and instructs subordinates;
  • Ensures that all park maintenance work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Special Requirements
  • Must have possession of an appropriate valid driver's license issued by the state of North Carolina and the ability to obtain a CDL. 
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more with assistance. 
  • Must have good knowledge of safety rules and regulations. 
  • Must be able to train and lead others in their work assignments. 
  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair, maintenance and construction of buildings and related structures; of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the work;
  • Must have general knowledge of the custodial care and maintenance of public parks and facilities;
  • Must have ability to prepare estimates and order materials for building construction and repair jobs;
  • Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department officials and employees;
  • Must have ability to prepare plans, specifications and detailed reports; Must have ability to plan and supervise the work of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers;
  • Must have ability to prepare a divisional budget and monitor accounts for expenditures.
  • NCDACS Pesticide license or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date.
  • Formal Education: Amount of Training, either on-the-job or formal education, usually associated with this occupation in addition to the Reasoning, Math and Language detailed below:
  • Supervision
    • At least two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of environmental Turfgrass management practices including pest, disease and weed management.
Physical Requirements
Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens and applicants.
Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see from a distance when administering and observing employment tests, operating a motor vehicle or addressing an audience.
  • Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.
  • Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
  • Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
  • Accommodation – Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check entire work area. Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly at people who are located at varying distances.

(Fingering - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers primarily (rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling). All are requirements of this job.
  • Talking and/or Hearing: (Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word). (Hearing - Perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Both necessary to converse with employees working together to accomplish tasks. Must be able to hear over noise of motors to respond in the event there is a mechanical warning or verbal warning during operation of equipment.

  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks and handle practical situations and requests made by supervisor, employees or the general public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in an expedient manner. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directives. As a supervisor, must be able to be make responsible decisions so good judgment is extremely important.
Mathematics Ability
  • Using Arithmetic: Ability to use arithmetic to the extent of using figures when measuring areas and supplies, when calculating and counting. Must be able to count and figure the amounts of materials and/or supplies needed for grounds maintenance and repair assignments. Must be able to make reports containing mathematical calculations.
Language Ability
  • Read: Ability to read manuals, safety rules and regulations, City Personnel Ordinance, instructions, directions, report information and other documents relating to job.
  • Write: Ability to write instructions and/or directives as received, notes pertaining to the job, figures for measurements, completed assignments on a work log, messages and reports.
  • Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with supervisor, subordinates, other employees and the general public. Must be able to communicate clearly and rapidly during emergency situations.
 
Environmental Conditions
Physical Surroundings
  • The Parks Maintenance Crew Supervisor is subject to Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. The worker will be exposed to weather which is extremely hot and extremely cold, rain, sleet, ice, snow, high winds, flooding, and fog. Combining the type of work performed with the weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work outside in all weather conditions for long periods of time. The position is best suited for someone who doesn't mind getting hot, cold, wet, dirty and sweaty.
Hazards 
  • The Parks Maintenance Crew Supervisor will be exposed to trash, trees, grass, shrubbery, dirt, chemicals and fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, debris and insects, etc. and will sometimes work in confined spaces. Work is subject to final bloodborne pathogens.

  • Service vehicle, tractors with attachments, reel mowers, pickup truck with tailor, heavy dump truck, backhoes, tractor loaders, chippers, chain saws, riding mowers, trash cans and liners, pesticides, herbicides, pruners, hoses, ladders, fencing, hand tools and other work aids associated with this trade and safety manuals, City Personnel Resolution and operators' manuals.
