CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: LIFEGUARD, HEAD

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform safety-related work functions associated with monitoring the recreational activities of City swimming facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

· Provides direction, guidance and assistance to assigned employees; provides training as needed.

· Consults with assigned staff to review work requirements, status, and problems; assists with complex or problem situations.

· Assists in organizing department workload and making work assignments; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work.

· Assists in scheduling staff and facilities utilization.

· Patrols city pool and related facilities; monitors activities in swimming areas to provide assistance to swimmers, prevent accidents, and detect hazardous conditions such as disturbances or safety infractions.

· Monitors swimmers to determine swimming skill levels.

· Performs lifesaving acts on swimmers in danger of drowning, using rescue techniques and equipment.

· Administers first aid and CPR as necessary.

· Enforces safety rules/regulations and maintains order in swimming areas; cautions facility users against inappropriate conduct such as drinking or fighting; alleviates minor disputes between facility users.

· Cleans and backwashes filters; cleans and refills Chlorine feeders; replaces chemical lines as needed; and checks for leaks.

· Maintains skills in hazardous chemical use and handling for chemicals used in pool operations, including hydrochloric acid, lactic acid, calcium hypochlorite and sodium bicarbonate. 

· Assists with custodial and maintenance tasks necessary to operate and maintain swimming facilities; inspects facilities for cleanliness; cleans, fills and vacuums pools; blows debris from pool areas; cleans bathrooms; refills paper and supplies; and may perform tests on water samples to identify water content, alkalinity and acidity.

· Operates a variety of equipment and tools associated with lifesaving activities and swimming facility operations; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

· Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, schedules, or other documents.

· Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

· Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance.

· Responds to complaints and questions related to swimming facility operations; provides information, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution.

· Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, facility users, officials, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate activities, review status of activities, exchange information, or resolve problems.

· Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

· Informs supervisors of rental activities and other events at the pool.

· Inventories cleaning supplies, first aid supplies and related equipment. 

· Monitors adjunct hillside park picnic area and entrance to swimming facility.

· Clears swimming areas as needed due to unsafe swimming conditions; and reopens facility in accordance with established safety guidelines.

· Maintains regular and predictable in person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson as required.

· Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the City’s Drug and Alcohol policy.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

May deposit daily revenues at bank.

Performs related duties as required, necessary, or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Vocational/technical training in lifesaving and first aid; supplemented by one (1) to two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving lifeguard work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain valid Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Certification. Must possess and maintain valid First Aid and CPR certification. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information. 

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
