The City of Gresham has an exciting and challenging opportunity for an Engineer 1 to join our team of engineering professionals at the Department of Environmental Services’ Transportation Division. The ideal candidate will have engineering skills, relevant technical and project experience, and strong communication skills to effectively work with citizens, contractors, consultants and City employees.

The individual in this position will serve on our Traffic Engineering team within the Transportation Division. The team works both proactively and responsively to improve the safety and efficiency of how the City of Gresham’s transportation system operates. The individual in this position will play a key role in supporting transportation system maintenance and operations, traffic signal design and engineering and roadway safety analysis and engineering. The individual will also be the public face of the Traffic Engineering team in fielding concerns from our customers, applying engineering skill and creativity in problem-solving to enhance how our transportation system serves our community.
 
What you will get to do:
  • Provide staff engineering support for traffic signals operations, including use of software applications that monitor their status and timing.
  • Update traffic signal timing for use in ATC signal controllers.
  • Coordinate with staff signal electricians and area schools to set and maintain timing and settings for traffic signals and flashers.
  • Lead team efforts related to identification of high-crash locations and development of engineering safety countermeasures.
  • Receive, analyze and respond to customer requests related to issues with the City's road network.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with internal and external partners on efforts to monitor and improve transportation system safety in Gresham.
  • Design traffic signal and streetlighting systems under the supervision of the Signals Engineer and prepare plans and specifications for construction.
  • Review plans prepared by other engineers for consistency with City standards.
  • Provide Construction Engineering and other technical support for City traffic signal and other projects.
  • Review temporary traffic control plans submitted by utilities and developers to ensure they comply with City requirements for safe operation of the transportation system.
  • Review submitted land development applications and pre-applications to ensure that City Public Works Standards related to transportation system infrastructure are satisfied.
  • Perform routine traffic capacity analysis using software applications.

Knowledge of:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or related field
  • One (1) year of engineering work experience, preferably related to transportation
  • Oregon Fundamentals of Engineering certificate or similar accreditation
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Good driving record (according to our driving matrix)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience with transportation system management and operations
  • Demonstrated experience with traffic signal system design and operation
Driving Matrix:
You will be disqualified from this process if you possess any of the following driving infractions:
  • A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury.
  • Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years.
  • Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one- year period.
  • Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period.
