Compensation and Benefits:
Hiring Salary Range: $49,834. - $56,954. Full Salary Range: $43,285. - $77,458..Annually

Work Schedule:
Wednesday - Tuesday; 8 am -4:30 pm 
The Laboratory Specialist collects and analyzes water and wastewater samples mandated by the US EPA and the State of North Carolina. Qualitative and quantitative tests are conducted on influent and effluent samples, which include residential, commercial, and industrial samples as well. This is done for compliance, process control, performance testing, and resolving unknown issues and is required to maintain the certifications for our facilities. The laboratory specialists perform quality control to verify the accuracy and precision of analytical lab tests. This position leads and coordinates compliance monitoring programs and maintains all necessary documentation for annual laboratory inspections by the State. Additionally, the laboratory specialist maintains, calibrates, troubleshoots, and performs preventative maintenance on all laboratory instrumentation. Also, the laboratory specialist enters, reviews, validates, and interprets laboratory results for North Carolina DENHR monthly operating reports, federal NPDES reports, and city-issued pretreatment permits. This position interacts with the public by fielding questions and concerns regarding water and wastewater treatment, as well as providing education on water and wastewater treatment processes. The laboratory specialist also works with treatment plant operators as support by preparing chemical reagents for the lab and training personnel on instrumentation necessary to perform process control analyses. Lastly, the laboratory specialist assists with managing chemical inventory and ordering laboratory supplies.  The job is NON-EXEMPT under FLSA.Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree 
    • "OR" equivalency of an Associates Degree with 7 years of Water and Wastewater laboratory, or related Science field
  • Valid Driver's License
  • 4 years of experience in Water Treatment and/or Wastewater laboratory, or "directly" related field 
  • NC bacteriological certification ("OR" the ability to obtain within 18 months of hire date)
  • NC C surface water operator certification (or obtain within 18 months of hire date)
  • Microsoft Office experience 
An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or other related Science field
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, with emphasis on Excel and Access 
  • General knowledge of TOC autosampler instruments, ISE probes, Hach meters, ICP-MS, GC-MS, Microbiological Techniques, and UV-VIS preferred.
  • High attention to detail with QA/QC results and standard production
  • Flexibility to accommodate two water treatment plant lab locations
  • Experience with producing stock chemicals for lab use 
Work Schedule: Monday -Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm
