The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Solid Waste Driver with the Solid Waste Department. This position is responsible for work activities in the Solid Waste Department which includes, but not limited to driving a packer or recycling truck on assigned routes, assisting laborers in loading refuse or recyclables as required. Works under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of the Solid Waste Division.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skills in driving and operating refuse and recycling vehicles. Knowledge of occupational hazards, and safety practices and procedures. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to perform physical labor under varying weather conditions. Ability to communicate with City employees and the general public.
Education, Certification and Experience: One (1) year experience in driving and operating heavy equipment. Valid Driver’s License required. Must obtain a Kansas Driver’s License within 60 days of establishing residency. Must obtain valid Kansas Class B CDL Driver's License within first 6 months. Applicant must make available drug testing history and pass drug test.
Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e. moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions.
Surfaces: Includes, but not limited to dirt, sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt, grass and wood.
Physical Characteristics: Includes, but not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to 26-50 pounds and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
