Job Description:

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Manager of Salomon Farm Park, Outdoor Recreation, and Boating the incumbent supervises the programs, recreational activities, and staff at Hurshtown Reservoir. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgement, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Hires, trains, and supervises staff;
  • Plans, develops, and facilitates programs;
  • Schedules staff;
  • Determines and secures resources needed including facilities, staff, equipment, supplies, etc;
  • Opens and closes Park;
  • Conducts opening and closing procedures for the season;
  • Collects fees from users;
  • Maintains daily/weekly attendance records and expense/revenue records;
  • Submits daily reports and records to Parks Office and City Utilities;
  • Deposits weekly and daily revenue to bank;
  • Supervises grounds maintenance and equipment maintenance;
  • Operates power mower or small tractor mower as needed;
  • Assigns duties to staff;
  • Reports attendance/usage;
  • Review and submit staff timecards;
  • Rents life jackets, boats, and other equipment;
  • Attends monthly meeting with staff/supervisor.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The incumbent is responsible to manage their performance in accordance with this job description and the performance expectations provided to them by management. Management will work with the incumbent, as needed, to ensure performance expectations are clearly communicated and performance goals are achieved.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent has routine supervision over 10 to 15 employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school education or general education degree (GED), plus 2 years of advanced education in Recreation, Communication or some other related field;
  • Must possess two or more years experience in supervision.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and/or ABILITIES

  • Must have acquired mower safety/weed trimmer safety skills;
  • Organizational skills contributive to setting priorities, meeting deadlines and coordinating events;
  • Effective written and oral communication skills conducive to dealing with the general public, co-workers, subordinates and supervisors;
  • Ability to understand moderately complex, relatively standardized tasks, processes or operations;
  • Ability to apply routine practices, rules, regulations, procedures or techniques that are relevant to assigned tasks.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Incumbent lends major contributions involving authoritative applications of Parks and Recreation Department policies and practices to especially complex matters. General objectives and boundaries are indicated. Problems during work causing questions about objectives and boundaries are discussed. Decisions and recommendations are reviewed for attainment of objectives and compliance with Parks and Recreation Department and City of Fort Wayne policy.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Incumbent makes choices and decisions and acts on varied non-standardized, non-routine assignments. Errors in decision or work are either readily detected and/or corrected through supervisory review. Incumbent has contact with persons employed by other agencies, or with public. Incumbent handles questions, complaints requiring judgment and tact in order to render service, carry out policy or maintain coordination.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Indiana Driver's License;
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.
