City of Durango is Hiring a Lifeguard - Part Time Near Durango, CO
- Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies.
- Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
- Inspect the facility on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions or equipment problems to the supervisor.
- Perform cleaning duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Complete records and reports.
- Participate in regular in-service training sessions.
- Maintain current required certifications.
- Exercise regularly to maintain fitness level (strength and endurance).
- Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
Other Duties:
- Attend and participate in professional meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of recreation and facility management.
- Ensure adherence to safe work practices.
- Demonstrate professionalism.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Assist other departments as necessary.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
Knowledge of:
Operations, services and activities of a municipal recreation facility, including aquatics facilities.Modern and complex principles and practices of recreation and aquatics services, facility management.Lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.Required CPR/AED, First Aid and Lifeguarding skills.Facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures.Leadership and public relations skills.Decision-making skills.
Ability to:
Perform CPR/AED, First Aid and Lifeguarding skills, as necessary.
Operate a multi-line telephone system and direct calls appropriately.Deal effectively and diplomatically with the public.Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for successful job performance.Maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of effectively interacting and communicating with others.Use and perform normal maintenance of office machines (copier, computer, printer, fax, etc.) and aquatics equipment.Work Environment:
Indoor and outdoor recreational facility. May work in or around water and slippery surfaces; exposure to noise, fumes and hazardous materials.
Physical Activities:
Ability to perform all Lifeguarding rescue and safety skills, as required by the American Red Cross, in the pools or on dry land in the Aquatics area or within the Center.Handling of equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. including floor to waist and overhead lifting;Ability to lift, push and move equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs;Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, reach, carry, grasp and turn objects;Ability to climb stairs; and stand, sit and walk for up to 60 minutes at a time;Frequent use of phone handset and repetitive use of hand & fingers to take messages, operate office equipment, use computer keyboard & computer mouse and to perform other office tasks;Acceptable eyesight to read printed material & a computer monitor and to operate office equipment;Acceptable hearing to communicate with others in person or through telephonic means;Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others via the phone, at meetings and to greet and assist visitors. Education or Formal Training and Licenses:
Minimum Qualifications
Current Certification in the following:Possession of valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid.Possession of valid American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer.Successful pre-employment testing for Lifeguarding skills and knowledge.
Experience:
Completion of required American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer courses. NOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employee may perform other related duties as established to meet the ongoing needs of the organization
