City of Durango is Hiring a Lake Maintenance II Near Durango, CO

To perform as the Lake Maintenance II for the City of Durango Lake Nighthorse Recreation Area involving the inspection and decontamination of watercraft as well as the continual monitoring of the entrance station which includes occasionally being stationed at a drive-up window, operating a point-of-sale computer program, greeting, and assisting lake visitors, and assisting with facilities maintenance. Access control, program registration, visitor use tracking, and cash handling and accounting. To perform routine park maintenance duties and a variety of related tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform aquatic nuisance species inspections and decontamination on a variety of watercraft and trailers.
  • Greet and assist the public in a courteous and responsive manner; provide information and directions for City attractions; locate staff, direct visitors to Lake Nighthorse amenities.
  • Perform entrance station functions periodically including facility admissions, recreation program registrations, and watercraft inspections on the computer, involving cash handling and accounting.
  • Assist with administrative duties including record keeping and data collection.
  • General public reception in-person and by telephone. Performs access control and monitors computer systems.
  • Assist in Lake Nighthorse Recreation Area operations, including daily opening and closing functions.
  • Ability to multitask and quickly adapt to changing work conditions as well as possible extreme weather conditions.
  • Maintain park and open space grounds including trash removal, trimming, and a variety of landscaping and facility maintenance duties.
  • Patrol of Lake Nighthorse grounds by foot, motorized vehicles, and boat to collect debris, and to attend to any possible safety and parking issues as well as lake supervision.
  • Assists with inventories and ordering supplies and equipment for the recreation facility. 
  • Assists with cleanliness of the facility which includes entrance station, toilets, parking areas, boat ramp and courtesy docks.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
  • Operates various power tools for trail maintenance and other projects including wood saws, chainsaws, leaf-blowers and weed trimmers.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of all departmental maintenance equipment.

City Organization Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Represent the Department and City to other staff and members of the public.
  • Provide quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance. 

Supervisory Relationships:
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities, although may provide leadership of community volunteers.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • Operations, services, and activities of a municipal recreation facility.
  • Basic knowledge of principles and practices of recreation services and facility operations.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment, including computerized cash register, multi-line telephones, and copiers.
  • Mathematical principles and practices.
  • Cash handling techniques.
Skill in:
  • Locating and correcting defects in facilities and equipment.
  • Operating and maintaining all assigned tools, light equipment and moderate to heavy power-driven equipment. 
  • Communicating clearly and concisely primarily in verbal form.
 
Ability to:
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including point of sale computer software, multi-line telephone, and copier.
  • Complete boat inspection and cultural resources sensitivity training.
  • Operate a watercraft on open water.
  • Deal effectively and diplomatically with the public.
  • Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Operate a computer and relevant software programs, including point of sale and record tracking databases.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for successful job performance.
  • Maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of effectively interacting and communicating with others.
  • Self-motivate and adapt to changing situations.
  • Learn boating safety procedures. 
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in a in a variety of environments, indoors, outdoors, varied terrain, and park like setting and on the water.
  • Mostly standing to perform entrance station duties with periods of mobility and physical activity.
  • Workload will fluctuate with park visitation.
Physical and Mental Requirements/Activities:
•This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of lifting/moving or force and occasional lift, move or drag 100 pounds or more while performing essential functions of the job.
•Work regularly requires the ability to stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, climb, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and speak and hear. 
•Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus. 
•Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in English.
•Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
•Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
•Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions. 
•Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and following directions. 
 
 
Minimum Education and Certification: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver’s license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid CPR/AED and First Aid Certificate.
Possession of or ability to obtain Watercraft Inspection and Decontamination Certification.
Minimum Experience: One year of customer service and clerical experience, including cash handling. Experience working with the public in park settings preferred. Experience with light maintenance and repair.
