City of Dothan is Hiring a Fleet Technician I (Automobile Equipment) Near Dothan, AL

This position is responsible for the mechanical repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment.
Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday from 3 PM to 11 PM
  • Performs engine, exhaust, electrical, brake, hydraulic, HVAC, transmission, and other system repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance functions, including checking the condition of and operation of batteries, fluids, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, brakes, etc.
  • Performs a variety of engine diagnostic procedures.
  • Performs emergency roadside repairs on vehicles as required; troubleshoots vehicle/equipment failures at job sites; operates a wrecker to transport vehicles for repairs.
  • Completes required paperwork related to work orders.
  • Maintains shop equipment and assigned tools.
  • Delivers vehicles and equipment to the dealer for repairs.
  • Maintains the shop and performs housekeeping duties.
  • Installs specialized equipment on vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs related duties.

  • Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot- checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
 
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include manufacturer maintenance and repair manuals, work safety guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
 
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of related vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair duties. The variety of equipment to be maintained contributes to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to participate in the repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe and well-maintained vehicles for a variety of city operations.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, dealers, and vendors.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
 PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
 
  • The work is typically performed in a garage, stockroom, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, landfill environment, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
  • Graduation from standard senior high school or GED, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and
  • Two (2) years recent experience as a mechanic (maintenance/repair of automotive vehicles – light to medium; gas and diesel powered and minor automatic transmission repair including Allison, Ford, GM, and Chrysler).
  • NOTE: Associate’s degree and/or certification in Automotive Technology substitutes for (2) years work experience.
Condition of Employment/Promotion/Demotion/Transfer
Must complete and accept Condition of Employment and Certification of Understanding & CDL Condition of Employment/Promotion/Demotion/Transfer Form. (See Condition for details.)
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must furnish own hand tools for mechanic trade. 
  • An employee in this position is required to participate in after-hour standby duty to include holidays and weekends.
  • Valid operator’s driver license and an acceptable driving record. (PBA 9/10/01)
  • Employees are required to obtain a Class A Driver License (CDL) within 120 days of date of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer to this position. (See condition for details.)
  • In an emergency and/or standby situation, an employee in this position must be able to report to his/her regular workstation in a maximum of 30 minutes from the time of notification. (Sec. 2-30.(2) / PBA 1/9/95). The requirement must be met within six (6) months of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer.
  • An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
  • Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and ransom tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 8/13/12)
  • Must meet the City of Dothan’s employment physical standards, which include drug/alcohol testing.

Qualified applicants will be evaluated based on training and experience as documented on their application. This evaluation will comprise 60% of the final grade. The written exam will comprise the other 40% of the final grade.

The written examination is scheduled for May 22, 2024. If you meet the minimum qualifications, an email notification inviting you to self-schedule the written exam will go out at a later date. You MUST self-schedule your slot or you will not be allowed to test. 

The content areas of the written examination, for the position of Fleet Technician I (Automobile Technician), includes the following:

Wheels, Brakes, Steering and Suspension Systems
Tools and Equipment
Safe Work Practices
You will be allowed two (2) hours and fifteen (15) minutes to complete the written exam. Once the written exam begins, you will not be allowed to leave the room until you have finished.
NOTE: An applicant on vacation is responsible for attending the examination on the date scheduled. An applicant falling under federally protected leave (i.e., FMLA, USERRA) is responsible for notifying the Personnel Department in writing no later than the closing date by emailing jobs@dothan.org.
