Job Summary The Library Public Service Specialist I focuses on information reference and referral assistance to library users; assists customers on the computers and other technology. Job Description Overview The Library Public Service Specialist I focuses on information reference and referral assistance to library users; assists customers on the computers and other technology: and assists patrons in the selection of materials to ensure library customers' informational and recreational needs are met. Essential Functions 1. Assists library customers in locating information and answering reference questions by interpreting and analyzing information requests, while using the library online catalog, databases, downloadable content, and the Internet. 2. Assists patrons with locating materials, using computers, or explaining library procedures such as getting a library card, checking out materials, using the Internet, making copies, etc. 3. Builds relationships with library users, community members, local groups and agencies. 4. Assists customers in finding their next book/movie to check-out. 5. Offers one-on-one computer and job seeking assistance. 6. Creates material promotional displays, reading lists, and presentations as assigned. 7. Assists with planning, creating and presenting programming and outreach under the coordination of the assigned program team member. 8. May be designated in charge of the branch or unit in the absence of the building manager. 9. Under direct supervision, develops and maintains collections in assigned areas. 10. Performs other library support services including opening and closing buildings and assisting in keeping the library in a neat, clean, and orderly condition. 11. Assists with shelving, checking in and curbside service, on a limited basis and as assigned. 12. Keeps abreast of current library issues, trends, and information in order to provide quality service to library patrons. 13. Travels from one work site to another as staffing needs require. 14. Performs all other duties as assigned. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of research techniques. Knowledge of library policies and procedures. Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently on assigned projects. Ability to deal with conflict in an effective and kind manner. Ability to exercise judgment with regard to library policies and procedures. Ability to listen and determine needs of patrons. Ability to work with and relate to a diverse community and with customers of all ages. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to organize and follow through on priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to learn routine and specific tasks within a reasonable time. Ability to present information to co-workers and customers in a relatable way. Ability to establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Ability to deal with library patrons in a tactful and courteous manner. Must have demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Skilled in frontline customer service. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Proficient with technology, especially Microsoft Office, internet, library catalog, downloadable content and databases. Enthusiasm for public engagement and customer service. Spanish and other language skills and/or subject area expertise is highly desired. Experience Two (2) years of frontline customer service experience or library services. Education Bachelor's degree in English, Library Sciences, History, or other related field. An associate degree/60 hours college credit and at least four (4) years of full-time frontline customer service experience may fulfill the education and experience requirement. Licenses and Certifications None Salary Range $41,651.99 - $47,372.65 The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
