Works under the general guidance and direction of the Shift Sergeant or other superior officers as necessary, to perform law enforcement work in the protection of life, property, and the civil rights of individual citizens. Officers of this rank enforce City, County, State and Federal Statutes, laws and ordinances. Police officers preserve peace; prevent, detect and investigate accidents and crimes; arrest violators; and provide aid and comfort to citizens in emergency situations. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.Performs Police duties including walking, bicycle, and vehicle patrols, traffic control, preparing reports and responding to emergency situations.Directs traffic to ensure rapid vehicular flow and to protect pedestrians from injury. Continual assignments also involve being alert to detect unusual or suspicious circumstances, arresting persons committing offenses, and issuing traffic violation tickets.Independently performs a variety of line police duties to maintain law and order and preserve the peace. Exercises arrest authority in motor vehicle violations, misdemeanors and other minor crimes, as well as apprehending persons guilty of felonies.Officers patrolling are to be alert to detect conditions and situations which vary from the norm. Position stops, questions suspicious persons, and if necessary, detains them.Investigates and determines the cause of a broken window, abandoned automobile, crowd of people or related situations.Responds to emergency calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, complaints, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, reports of prowlers, and other situations as required.Assists the injured and administers first aid, summons assistance, takes measurements, prepares diagrams, interviews witness and persons involved, preserves evidence, arrests violators and prepares written reports when conducting a preliminary accident or crime investigation. Appears in court, presents evidence, and assists in the prosecution of cases.Performs work in accordance with departmental rules and regulations.Assists citizens in non-public and non-emergency situations, using appropriate equipment and/or techniques. If unable to assist, the officer will advise who or what is available to address the citizen’s problem properly.Usage of radio communications and computers in accordance with City policies and Federal regulations.Performs related work as required, which may include investigation or plain-clothes work.Regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.Maintains positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies, and the general public.Performs essential position duties and responsibilities under the working conditions and physical demands described herein.Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Meet the education or reciprocity requirements set by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and must be licensed or eligible to be licensed as a full-time police officer by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training. Eligible to be licensed is defined as having completed the academic, skills training and passing the license exam. Successfully complete a thorough Coon Rapids Police Department background investigation, psychological examination, comprehensive medical examination, drug testing and agility test. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions. This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position will be primarily located in the field, and likely will be exposed to emergency and disaster situations. When in the office the position will use common office supplies and equipment, and the noise level is typically quiet. Exposure to computer monitors in the office and police vehicle is typical. This position works closely with others. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.Must possess a valid driver’s license.Certified and in compliance with minimum standards as set forth by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training.
