City of Commerce City is Hiring an Aquatics Assistant Near Commerce, CO

The CIty of Commerce CIty is seeking a motivated and passionate Aquatics Assistant to join our team over at Eagle Pointe Recreation Center! Under the general direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, the Aquatics Assistant will be responsible for general aquatic responsibilities, including, but not limited to, guarding, facilitation of swim lesson program, pool maintenance, daily supervision of aquatic staff and facilitation and operation of the seasonal outdoor water park.

The Aquatics Assistant must work successfully in a team-oriented atmosphere that provides citizens and other employees with accurate information, excellent customer service and human relation skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond calmly and professionally to stressful or emergency situations
  • Provides general supervision and training of Aquatic staff in Aquatic Coordinator’s absence
  • Ability to effectively supervise up to 200 variable hour staff in the absence of the Aquatic Coordinator or Supervisor
  • Facilitates swim lesson program in in collaboration with the Aquatics Coordinator
  • Coordinates private lesson program
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Works to build relationships/rapport with other team members both within the work group, the division, the department and across departments
  • Stays abreast of and applies knowledge of pool filtration systems, pool sanitation, pool maintenance, and mechanical systems
  • Monitors activities in swimming pool and adjacent areas to prevent injuries and accidents
  • Assists in training and certification of aquatic and facility staff in CPR/AED, First Aid, and lifeguarding; trains and recertifies facility staff in CPR/AED and First Aid
  • Acts as a Role Model for City Values
  • Understands the role of Commerce City as a municipality
  • Participates and assists in the implementation of City-wide special events, i.e. Halloween, Neighborhood Outreaches, Fourth of July, etc.
  • Conducts swimming classes for various age groups and ability levels
  • Assists with recruiting, interviewing and hiring staff
  • Attends and conducts a variety of meetings such as staff meetings and in-services
  • Utilizes a clear and concise writing style
  • Speaks clearly and can be easily understood; delivers information clearly and thoroughly in an instructional setting
  • All employees must model and demonstrate the City Values at all times during the course of employment; to include: Integrity, Collaboration, Innovation, Respect and Excellence.

Essential Supervisory Duties

  • Participates in aquatic evaluations and makes recommendations for change and improvement
  • Helps plan and perform monthly staff audits

Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Requires high school graduation or equivalent; Recreation degree preferred. Requires a minimum of two years experience life guarding and managing at a public pool, standard StarGuard First Aid, CPR/PR/AED, and Lifeguard Training certifications. Must obtain CPO or AFO and StarGuard LGI within the first year of employment. Must have experience in telephone courtesy, cash handling and customer service. Must have PC computer knowledge and skills in Windows and MS Office Environment. MS Word and ACTIVENET experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations, making proper judgments as to the correct course of action
  • Ability to prepare various documents, records, incident/accident reports, and employee appraisals with the proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech
  • Thorough and comprehensive knowledge of all assigned areas of Aquatics
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the Parks Recreation and Golf Department and ability to stay abreast of changes in policy, procedures, methods, and department needs
  • Ability to work with a diverse population
  • Ability to work successfully in a team-oriented atmosphere that provides citizens and employees with accurate information
  • Ability to work with participants needing program adaptation or reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees and various facility users in order to establish and maintain positive working relationships

  • Ability to use independent judgment and decision-making within established policy

Equipment Used, Work Environment and Physical Activities

  • Driving: May need, or have ability, to drive a city or personal vehicle in the normal course of business
  • Office Equipment: Daily use of computer, keyboard, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, phone (desk and cell). Daily use of software programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Word, Excel, and ActiveNet.
  • Other Equipment: Digital camera, pumps/motors, first aid supplies, chemical controllers and testing kits, lane lines, high-rate sand filters, safety devices (rescue tubes, backboards, whistles, 2-way radio, shepherds crook, buoys, poles, bag valve masks and oxygen), AED unit. Must be able to wear/use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Physical Activities: Moderate physical activity that may include walking, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying.
  • Lifting: Ability to lift, carry, and exert up to 50 pound and climb ladder
  • Vision and Hearing: Must have visual acuity to see and read paper and electronic documents. Must be able to answer telephones, communicate conversation and respond to verbal inquires.
  • Exposure to Environmental Conditions: Will be exposed to extreme heat, cold, dry, wet, odors, smoke, loud noises, vibrations, dust or intense light. Will be exposed to chemicals including cleaners, solvents, paints and other potentially toxic agents. Work may be performed in precarious or tight spaces.
  • Schedule: Position generally works a non-traditional work week. May require attendance at off-site meetings
  • Additional Working Conditions: May be exposed to work settings that vary in convenience and comfort
  • Safety Sensitive: This position is subject to the city’s drug screening
