SEASONAL - Historical Interpreter - Rock Ledge Ranch (PT Guide or Interpreter)

Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services seeks a Historical Interpreter to work at Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site.

This is a seasonal (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Worker's Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees' Retirement Association).
 
Anticipated dates of employment are from the end of May through mid-August. Opportunities to work additional hours at special events from September through December may be available. Normal work schedule will vary based on department needs but will most likely be Wednesday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Must be able to work weekends and holidays. Total hours worked will not exceed 1,500 annually.

Essential Functions

  • Enthusiastically initiate conversations with visitors of varied ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds
  • Tell the story of the Pikes Peak region and of the people who lived and worked at Rock Ledge Ranch in a compelling and thought-provoking way
  • Conduct hands-on historical and educational activities for visitors
  • Supervise adult and junior volunteers
  • Perform basic housekeeping in the historic areas
  • Demonstrate traditional crafts, cooking, and culture
  • Obtain an in-depth and varied historical knowledge of American history and culture through continuous training and research
Examples of Job Competencies
  • Knowledge of Pikes Peak area and United States history
  • Skilled in traditional cooking and crafts
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
  • Ability to facilitate discussions of sensitive topics
  • Good organizational and time-keeping skills
  • Have education or experience in history, agriculture, education, or other related field
  • Education and/or experience in history, agriculture, education, or other related field
  • Public speaking experience with large and small groups
  • Experience working with children
The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
Regular attendance is a requirement for this position.
Physical Demands: Period clothing will be provided and must be worn, however employees may be required to purchase limited items at their own expense. The ability to occasionally lift 35 pounds and stand, stoop, climb, bend, and/or walk for extended periods is also required.
Environmental Conditions: Outside in all weather conditions.
