City of Clovis, NM is Hiring a LIGHT EQUIPMENT OPERATOR LANDFILL Near Clovis, NM

Position involves the operation of light equipment such as tractors, loaders, mowers, saws, and various other hand and power tools.

**This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.**

  • Operate equipment such as front loaders, bob cat tractor with attachments, (loader bucket, auger, jackhammer, and broom) farm tractor with attachments, (6' mower, box blade) and general equipment such as pick-up trucks.
  • Assist with scheduled service of Landfill Division equipment such as oil changes and lube.
  • Mowing Landfill grounds and fence lines using tractor/mower, weed eaters and swing blade cutters and picking up blown litter from fields and fence lines to maintain Landfill property in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Maintains safe operating procedures, being cautious of overhead utilities, gas meters, etc. and of fellow employees.
  • Utilizes hand tools such as shovels, pitchforks, rakes and small power tools such as saws and mowers.
  • May occasionally be required to operate heavy equipment such as scrapers, loaders, dozers, and compactors as needed with proper training and supervision.
  • Cleans and services city equipment and machinery and assists with minor repairs and submits requests to Shop Division for major repairs.
  • Performs manual work incidental to the Landfill Division and Public Works Department.
  • Provides both written and verbal reports on property damage and accidents to Superintendent immediately upon occurrence.
  • Perform other assigned duties as designated by the Landfill Superintendent and his assistant.

Minimum Qualifications

  • No specific educational requirement.
  • One (1) year of work experience or equivalent with Light Equipment.

Licenses and Certificates

  • Valid New Mexico Commercial driver license with appropriate endorsements, or be able to obtain in 6 months.
  • Landfill Operator Certificate-Preferred
  • HAZWHOPER Certification ­­Preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, squatting; pushing, pulling and lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services.
  • Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies.
  • Essential duties are predominantly performed outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
  • Employee is exposed to airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures, travel from site to site, work around traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • Use of safety shoes, glasses and other equipment is required.
