City of Castroville is Hiring a Water Service Apprentice (Tech. I, II, III) Near Castroville, TX

JOB SUMMARY: The overall purpose and general responsibilities of the job.

Responsible for performing work involved in the maintenance, installation, repair and operation of City water distribution system//wastewater collection and electric utility services, assisting with pipeline repair and construction, installing meters, digging holes, loading and unloading vehicles; and performing other work related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The fundamental duties and tasks that define the job

  • Performs daily routine water well and wastewater collection lift station checks for operational status and historical data and monitors disinfectant residuals in the distribution systems.
  • Supervises chlorine cylinder change-out activities and oversees disinfection system maintenance and repairs.
  • Secures mandatory monthly water bacteriological samples and accomplishes delivery to the lab
  • Calls in “line locates” utilizing the State 811 System prior to commencing excavations for routine construction or emergency repairs.
  • Repairs water meter settings and service lines, water laterals and mains.
  • Performs line flushing, water and sewer service taps and service lateral and line construction.
  • Addresses wastewater collection system maintenance protocols and stoppages via operation of sewer jetting machine.
  • Accomplishes basic wastewater treatment plant operational maintenance, secures mandatory weekly sampling, and delivers samples to the lab
  • Operates sludge production process, discharges pond effluent to irrigation for ag hay production and/or grass maintenance at Regional Park
  • Achieves duties required to maintain stable operation of the treatment system and additional duties assigned
  • Completes departmental tasks as assigned

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum requirements for formal education and job-related experience. Graduation from high school or General Education Development (GED) Certificate, Valid Texas Driver’s licenses, and Class C Water and / or Wastewater license(s). 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Utilized in the performance of the essential functions. • Knowledge of Water Distribution and/or Wastewater Collection systems 

• Knowledge of worksite safety 

• Proficient in the use of materials, tools and equipment commonly used in a construction environment 

• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing 

• Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports 

• Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job 

License and Certification 

• Valid Texas Driver’s License 

• Completes Water and / or Wastewater training courses required to maintain TCEQ licensing and / or complete prerequisites Challenges 

• Tech. I - TCEQ Class C Water and /or Wastewater License examinations 

• Tech. II - Class C Texas Water or Class C Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License 

• Tech III - Multiple Class C and/or B Water and/or Wastewater licensing plus Customer Service Inspector, Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester, and/or License Irrigator. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements associated with performance of the Essential Job Functions.

 Physical requirements include frequently carrying/lifting 50 lbs., pushing or pulling 100 lbs.; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate small hand tools, construction equipment and laboratory equipment; subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform essential job functions. 

Preferred 

• Skill in using backhoe, loader and other heavy equipment 

• Class C Commercial Driver’s License
