JOB SUMMARY

The Maintenance Worker I is responsible for performing maintenance of streets and roadways, right of way, grounds, pump and valve stations, by repairing cleaning, painting and repairing cave-ins, drains and other related maintenance tasks. Performs routine landscaping maintenance such as trimming trees, hedges, bushes, and mowing lawns and other related tasks as necessary. The employee works according to set procedures under direct supervision and strictly adheres to all applicable state and local laws, regulations, safety rules, departmental policies, and procedures.

KEY FUNCTIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Safely operates tools and equipment in all types of weather, or conditions.The job may include morning, evening, weekend, holiday, split, or other work schedules.
  • Maintains green areas by mowing, weeding, and or trimming vegetation.
  • Maintains facilities, tools and equipment in a clean and neat appearance.
  • Maintains buildings and structures following direction from the supervisor and/or manager. This might include, but not limited to, drywall repair, painting, installation of fixtures, pavement hot and cold patches, street signs and pavement markings. It also involves cleaning, washing, moping, sweeping, vacuuming, re-stocking supplies, etc.
  • Maintains streets and roadways free of trash, debris, and FOD (foreign object damage)
  • Thoroughly inspects and performs daily equipment and tool inspections; reporting mechanical defects, needed repairs, and damage upon daily inspection.
  • Complies with all State and local laws; Departmental policies, safety rules, and procedures.
  • Reports hazardous and dangerous conditions in and around the facility, including incidents/accidents immediately.
  • Communicates professionally and responsibly.
  • Is able to work in groups, and is a good team player.
  • Operates had and power tools such as trimmers, vacuum sweepers, outdoor hand held power equipment and mowers.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Education and Experience

High school or GED, or sufficient education to read and write with no experience. Six months of work related experience preferred.

Special Certifications and License

Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Independence and Judgement

Minimal judgment; instructions, once established and defined, normally allow the job to be accomplished without direct and/or constant supervision; mostly routine work requiring that employee recognize obvious problems.

Initiative and Ingenuity

Low chance for error because work is routine/repetitive/simple/reviewed carefully; standard procedures: not demanded to come up with creative solutions; refers anything unusual to supervisor.

Supervisory and Responsibility

Does not supervise.

Financial Responsibility

Does not deal with money.

Level and Frequency of Outside Contacts

Infrequent or non-difficult contacts with other people inside and/or outside department; straightforward information exchange, etc.

Physical Demands

Mostly moderate and fairly steady active physical exertion; may require brief periods of heavy muscular exertion, such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Ability to exert up to 35-50 lbs. of force occasionally to move objects.

Responsibility for Equipment and Property

Responsible for assigned equipment/property used outside of office; use of a City vehicle.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to outdoor elements (several times per week).

Other Requirements
