City of Brooklyn Center, MN is Hiring a Summer Program Coordinator Near Brooklyn, MN

Position Summary

The City of Brooklyn Center is seeking three highly motivated, dedicated and creative individuals to supervise, plan, implement and provide leadership to the summer camp programs: Camp in the Center and Rec on the Go. This is a seasonal part-time position working 25-35 hours per week.

Examples of Duties

Coordination
  • Provide leadership and work as a team with Recreation Leaders, Brooklynk Interns, Inclusion Leaders and Junior Leaders to plan and execute high quality and age appropriate activities to youth program participants.
  • Plan successfully for upcoming activities ensuring proper supplies, equipment and program spaces are available.

Technical
  • Communicate and problem solve with recreation coordinator, co-workers, parents and participants.
  • Coordinate set up, take down and use of program equipment and materials.
  • Be prompt and prepared. Every program day will start and end on time.
  • Keep accurate records of daily attendance, accident reports and discipline reports.
  • Document and inform supervisor of on-site program concerns including scheduling conflicts, maintenance needs, and all other pertinent program related issues.
  • Inventory supplies and equipment for programs, communicate with supervisor and purchase additional supplies as directed.

General
  • Create a welcoming, fun, supportive, supervised and safe environment for participants at all times.
  • Maintain order and discipline while conducting activities.
  • Attend training and be available for all program dates and meetings.
  • Enhance participant experience and community engagement.
  • Complete assigned program reports, surveys and evaluations.
  • Administer basic first aid as needed.
  • Follow the City of Brooklyn Center policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
  • This position can expect work program hours primarily Monday-Thursday but may include some nights and weekends. Some programs are outdoors and may include rain, wind, humidity, heat, snow, ice and cold.
  • Program participants may range in ages from 6 to 13, with group sizes ranging from 8 to 30.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Communications:Must have the ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations; ability to speak and write English clearly. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with persons who do not speak English and are from a variety of different cultures. Must be able to assertively control conversations in order to quickly and accurately gather pertinent information and be able to communicate this information professional and precisely to the proper recipient. Be able to read and understand correspondence, memoranda and directives. Must have strong customer service skills.

Decision Making
: Must act in a decisive manner, using good judgment. Must be able to assess problems and situations, able to anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives. Must have knowledge of utilization of appropriate resources and the willingness to initiate use of available resources.

Interpersonal Relationships:
Provides excellent customer service. Must be able to work in cooperation with other staff members. Must be consistent in dealing with people; must have the ability to accept and provide constructive criticism and/or discipline; must have tact and diplomacy; must strive to promote a cooperative atmosphere in the department; must have a positive attitude.

Professional Attitude:
Must have commitment to the organization; willingness to take initiative; dependability; maturity in relationships with others; and self-confidence. Must represent the organization to other agencies, staff, and citizens with a courteous, helpful, and accurate business like attitude in all telephone and personal contact. Must have the ability to work as a team member.

Quality of Work:
Must be able to produce quality, accurate work. Must be able to detect and correct errors. Must be able to prioritize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Must be able to utilize work time properly and productively. Must be able to coordinate and follow through on projects to completion. Must be able to work independently on a wide variety of projects and assignments.

Technical Knowledge:
Must have working knowledge of computer software, publishing software, and office equipment including phones. Must have ability to quickly learn new information and initiate improvements as needed.

Physical Abilities:
Must have the ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media. Must have the ability to remain seated or standing at the same work-station for up to eight hours at a time with appropriate breaks within that time frame. Must have the ability to record names and numbers accurately. Must have ability to hear while answering telephone and receiving visitors at counter. Must have ability to bend to file and lift 25 pounds with or without accommodations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • College coursework in elementary education, child development, recreation programming, social work or related field.
  • At least three years working or volunteering with youth ages 6 – 13.
  • Experience working with youth in a structured and/or recreational setting.
  • Must have reliable transportation to program location.

Supplemental Information

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
Pay is dependent on qualifications
Program/Dates/Hours:
  • Mandatory Training: June 10th - 13th.
  • Camp in the Center: M-Th 7:45 a.m.- 4:45 p.m., June 17th - August 1th.
  • Rec on the Go: Mon. & Wed. 10 a.m. - 7 p.m, Tues & Thurs. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., June 17th - August 9th.
