General Statement of Duties
Under the direct supervision of the Street Supervisor and general supervision of the Street Manager, is responsible for performing manual and semi-skilled tasks and will be assigned maintenance work, equipment operation and/or pesticide and herbicide application functions by performing the following duties.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain municipal streets and rights-of-way in safe condition. Perform various duties in regards to repairs, maintenance and equipment operation.
- Drive truck to haul equipment and transport crew to work site.
- Operate and maintain medium to heavy-duty capacity dump trucks, tractors, trailers, and trucks with specialized equipment to include sand spreader, hot oil distributor, crack sealer, and equipment to perform road repair work.
- Operate truck-mounted snowplows and other snow removal equipment.
- Operate equipment of small to medium capacity such as front-end loader, backhoe, and trucks in assisting in performing Municipal road repair and patchwork. Operate steamer to open frozen storm sewers, catch basins and culverts.
- Operate other self-propelled equipment of similar size and complexity.
- Shovel, load and haul gravel mix, and snow as needed.
- Mow grass in City roadway ditches as deemed necessary.
- Repair City streets and bridges to include loading and unloading materials, fencing, crack filling, and picking up litter as needed. Operate City Street Sweeper.
- Position requires employee to be on-call and work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays as requested.
- Assists with application of pesticides and herbicides for control of weeds and pests.

- Attend training, seminars, and workshops as deemed necessary.
- Perform work in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.
- Perform other such duties and functions as directed and/or deemed necessary.

Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Experience in road repair and construction preferred.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
- Demonstrate ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to work in all types of weather conditions and have the ability to work occasional odd hours, holidays, and weekends.
- Must have ability to be tactful and handle questions or concerns appropriately.
- Must be safety conscious.

Certificates, Tests and Examination
- Successful competition in written tests and/or oral interviews.
- Possession of a valid South Dakota Commercial Driver’s License to include Tanker and Air Brake endorsements within 60 days of start date. Must have acceptable driving records.
- Obtain required Mosquito Abatement and herbicide Applicator’s Licenses within 90 days of hire.
- Other such examination as deemed necessary by the City.
