General Statement of Duties 

Under the direct supervision of the Street Supervisor and general supervision of the Street Manager, is responsible for performing manual and semi-skilled tasks and will be assigned maintenance work, equipment operation and/or pesticide and herbicide application functions by performing the following duties. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintain municipal streets and rights-of-way in safe condition. Perform various duties in regards to repairs, maintenance and equipment operation.
  2. Drive truck to haul equipment and transport crew to work site.
  3. Operate and maintain medium to heavy-duty capacity dump trucks, tractors, trailers, and trucks with specialized equipment to include sand spreader, hot oil distributor, crack sealer, and equipment to perform road repair work.
  4. Operate truck-mounted snowplows and other snow removal equipment.
  5. Operate equipment of small to medium capacity such as front-end loader, backhoe, and trucks in assisting in performing Municipal road repair and patchwork. Operate steamer to open frozen storm sewers, catch basins and culverts.
  6. Operate other self-propelled equipment of similar size and complexity.
  7. Shovel, load and haul gravel mix, and snow as needed.
  8. Mow grass in City roadway ditches as deemed necessary.
  9. Repair City streets and bridges to include loading and unloading materials, fencing, crack filling, and picking up litter as needed. Operate City Street Sweeper.
  10. Position requires employee to be on-call and work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends, and holidays as requested.
  11. Assists with application of pesticides and herbicides for control of weeds and pests.

Marginal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Attend training, seminars, and workshops as deemed necessary.
  2. Perform work in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.
  3. Perform other such duties and functions as directed and/or deemed necessary.

Education and/or Experience

  1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  2. Experience in road repair and construction preferred.
  3. Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  4. Demonstrate ability to work cooperatively with others.
  5. Ability to work in all types of weather conditions and have the ability to work occasional odd hours, holidays, and weekends.
  6. Must have ability to be tactful and handle questions or concerns appropriately.
  7. Must be safety conscious.

Certificates, Tests and Examination

  1. Successful competition in written tests and/or oral interviews.
  2. Possession of a valid South Dakota Commercial Driver’s License to include Tanker and Air Brake endorsements within 60 days of start date. Must have acceptable driving records.
  3. Obtain required Mosquito Abatement and herbicide Applicator’s Licenses within 90 days of hire.
  4. Other such examination as deemed necessary by the City.

  9. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  10. Ability to perform duties safely.
