What We Do
The Beverly Hills Fire Department is charged with the preservation of life and property within the Beverly Hills community. The dedicated men and women of the Beverly Hills Fire Department protect approximately 34,000 residents and an estimated 150,000-200,000 daily visitors in a 5.7 square mile area. The Beverly Hills Fire Department operates the city's three fire stations and responds to over 7,000 incidents per year. The Fire Department’s reputation for exemplary service is underscored by its Class I rating from the Insurance Services Office, an elite distinction carried by only a few fire departments in the nation.
Who We're Looking For
There is currently one vacant Deputy Fire Marshal position available.
The Deputy Fire Marshal plans, organizes, directs, supervises, and participates in fire prevention programs and activities. The ideal candidate for Deputy Fire Marshal will demonstrate extensive knowledge of fire codes, fire safety protocols, and environmental regulations. The ideal candidate will have the capability to devise effective methods for mitigating risks, perform analyses of fire programs, and review proposed projects for compliance.
The Deputy Fire Marshal is a working supervisor and directly supervises Fire Inspectors, Plan Check Inspectors, and other assigned safety support staff, coordinating unit activities with other units/divisions in the city. Thus, the ideal candidate should possess strong leadership and delegating skills. The ideal candidate is also proactive with a keen attention to detail and strong project management skills.
The Deputy Fire Marshal will be tasked with presenting information to council members and other groups. Thus, the ideal candidate will have strong writing and oral communication skills and a proven track record of explaining and presenting information in a manner that is easily understood.
Moreover, the ideal candidate should possess exceptional customer service skills. The ideal candidate is responsive and proactive when addressing the needs of the community while simultaneously maintaining compliance with codes and regulations. Candidates for this position must possess a strong commitment to public service, the ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion and act with integrity. .
Please note that the incumbent in this position will work a standard 40 hour work week with over time on an as-needed basis.
Position & Benefits
This position is represented by the Safety Support Association and is covered by the negotiated terms and conditions of that Association's Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The City provides a generous compensation and benefits package, including CalPERS retirement, health insurance (with option of up to $475/month as taxable cash), and generous vacation accruals. Selection Process

Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Three years employment as an inspector.
Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Fire Protection Engineering or other related fields.
Note: Additional experience may be used to substitute the educational requirement on a year for year basis, e.g., Associate’s degree and five years of experience as an inspector, seven years of experience as an inspector without a degree, etc.
License and Certificate
Possession of a valid California Class C driver license.
Fire Inspector I certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC).
Possession or ability to obtain ICC Fire Plans Examiner certification within 12 months of appointment.
Possession of PC 832 certificate preferred.
Knowledge of:
Uniform Fire and Building Codes, California State and local laws, standards, and ordinances.
State environmental laws and regulations, local ordinances, and standards.
Fire engineering principles, and the systems and equipment used in fire detection/suppression.
Fire prevention and inspection methods.
Fire life safety systems.
General building, electrical, plumbing, and construction methods and materials.
Principles and practices of supervision.
Fire cause and origin investigation practices, techniques, and laws.
Principles and practices of budget monitoring.
Principles and practices of safety management.
Customer service techniques.
Ability to:
Organize, implement, direct, and participate in Fire Prevention operations/activities.
On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job; intermittently analyze work papers, reports, and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem solve operational and technical policy and procedures.
Interpret and apply related laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Assist in the development and monitoring of an assigned program budget.
Supervise, train, motivate, and evaluate assigned staff.
Develop and recommend policies and procedures related to assigned operations.
Read and interpret plans, blueprints, specifications.
Conduct field investigations.
Conduct research and write comprehensive technical reports.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the scope of work.
Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
