Police officers require the ability to learn a considerable amount of factual material such as laws, statutes, regulations, ordinances and procedures, understand sometimes complex oral and written instructions, act effectively and calmly in emergency situations, operate assigned equipment skillfully and safely, prepare clear, concise yet comprehensive reports, analyze situations quickly and objectively, work effectively with the public, other agencies, and other employees.
 
The selection process:This recruitment is open continuously and applications will be reviewed regularly. Qualified applicants will be invited for a written exam and physical agility test. Eligible applicants who pass the written exam and physical agility test will be scheduled for oral boards. Final applicants will be required to pass a rigorous background examination, and any job offer will be contingent upon passing a medical exam, drug screen, and psychological evaluation.

Minimum qualifications:
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to meet the city's driving standards. 
  • Able to obtain Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Basic Certification within 18 months of date of hire.
  • 21 years of age or older by the time of hire. 
  • Must never have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that reflects adversely on the capacity to serve as a police officer.
  • Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) fingerprints must be completed and cleared prior to start date.
  • Able to pass background and reference check, drug screen, medical and psychological evaluation. 
  • Able to pass written exam, physical agility test and run a mile under nine minutes. 
  • Able to work varied shifts including weekends and holidays.

Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
