GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of a higher classification, performs skilled work in routine maintenance, construction and repair activities on sewer, drainage pipes, streets, roads, bridges, buildings, and other municipal physical facilities. Work also involves the operation of a variety of light automotive equipment in order to complete work assignments, and the trimming and removal of trees and stumps. Employees of this class are also responsible for operating construction equipment properly. Hazardous conditions are often encountered when employees are required to work at considerable heights and around power lines while operating power saws. Some positions in this classification may be on 24-hour call out for emergency situations. Work is assigned orally and in writing and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion. Performs other work as requested.
Note: Some employees within this classification are hired on a part-time basis and paid at an hourly rate.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Ability to read and write, and three months of experience in operating a variety of light automotive equipment.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will substitute for the equipment experience requirement. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
For positions requiring tree trimming experience, the required work experience for operation of equipment will be waived and substituted with tree trimming experience.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS
(Unless otherwise specified below, must possess at the time of appointment and must be maintained current throughout employment in this classification.)
Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license or a valid Louisiana Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
OTHER JOB ASPECTS
For security reasons, as per TSA provision 1542; all applicant/employees of the Greater Baton Rouge Airport District who have access to restricted areas will be required to have a ten (10) year criminal background check to the extent allowable by the law. Employees found to have an excessive criminal record or other misrepresentations of employment will not be eligible for employment.
SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION
Valid driver's license preferred. (Must provide current license information on your application and attach a license copy).
EXAMINATION
Maintenance examination required (may take up to 1 ½ hours from test start time). Subject areas and other exam preparation information are available at: https://www.brla.gov/261/Examination-Preparation. Examinations are available on most Tuesdays, 8:30 – 9:00 am, check-in, Thursdays, *12:00 - 12:30 pm, and Fridays, 8:30 – 9:00 am check-in. Please call Human Resources Recruiting and Examination at 389-3132 to confirm testing dates and times. Test check-in is on a first come-first served basis. There are occasions where the test room is filled to capacity and applicants are asked to return on another day for testing. Picture identification, proof of social security number and a completed online employment application are required for test room admittance. *Where exam volume is expected to be high, check-in of applicants may begin as early as 11:30 am in order to complete the check-in process prior to the required 12:30 cut-off time.
