BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB:Requires an individual with knowledge of current fire codes, building codes, current fire principles/ techniques for fire suppression and rescue. Must be skilled in operating various fire equipment. Must possess the ability to read, review documents and correspondence including professional journals, publications, and legislative data. Must demonstrate the ability to compute formulas for fire suppression plans; and be able to effectively communicate through written reports, letters, memos, or other necessary correspondence.
Under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, assists with coordination and implementation of the City of Azle Fire Department programs. Provides professional support and planning to assist in a wide variety of technical tasks /functions in support of fire safety codes, inspections of commercial and public buildings; investigates all fires, enforce all codes and ordinances related to fire safety; provide fire and safety prevention programs; provides technical and highly complex support to the Fire Chief. Performs mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery from emergencies and disasters. Develop and maintain comprehensive plans and aid in coordination with implementation of the plans with a primary focus on fire prevention and fire codes. Performs all other duties as required.
Essential Functions:Inspect all commercial and public buildings for safety and code violations.
Perform building and site plan review for all new construction for compliance with fire codes including automatic fire suppression and detection systems; prepare written fire code requirements; conduct final occupancy inspections.
Consult with contractors, engineers, architects, developers, builders, property owners and other agencies regarding construction projects and activities.
Interpret enforcement guidelines to department personnel, citizens and professional agencies; organize and maintain records.
Conduct fire investigations and investigate explosions to determine cause and origin, and to determine either accident or criminal activity and file criminal cases if applicable. Respond to and perform inspections originated from citizen complaints.
Prepare various reports on operations and activities; city streets and business listings; prepare written reports on all inspections, investigations, plan reviews and system tests.
Operate fire equipment during routine and emergency situations; confine and extinguish fire incorporating proper firefighting and safety procedures at all times; provide medical services as needed.
Responds to emergencies and exercises command responsibility on-scene.
Position Requirements:Education/Knowledge - Associate's degree in Fire Technology or related field from an accredited college or technical school. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience - Prefer five years' experience in fire prevention.
Certifications and Other Requirements - Valid Texas Class B Driver’s License, Texas Commission on Fire Protection Structure Firefighter Basic Certification prior to appointment, Texas Commission on Fire Protection Intermediate Fire Inspector Certifications, Texas Commission on Fire Protection Plans Examiner I, Basic Fire Investigator’s Certifications, and Basic Peace Officer Certification. Texas State Certified Emergency Medical Technician. Texas Commission on Fire Protection Fire Officer I.
Must have a working knowledge of Fire Codes, Life Safety Codes, Texas Health and Safety Codes, the Code of Criminal Procedure and Penal Codes. Must possess a proficient knowledge of fire prevention, code enforcement, hazardous materials, City Emergency Management Plan, and procedures of the public safety departments.
Must possess a working knowledge of computers, technology, and software relevant to the position.
