Job Summary and Responsibilities

Summary: The OSP Communications Ground Hand Laborer is responsible for working with your hands and assisting directly and indirectly with Equipment Operators, Lineman, and Splicers. Laborer’s jobs include assisting in the placing, rearranging, and removing poles, conduit, cable lines, handholes, pedestals and drops. You'll work with cables and conduit to perform maintenance and new build on outside plant equipment. As a Laborer, you’ll assist in installing lines and cables (including strand, fiber, coax, and copper) alongside equipment operators to dig holes and bury cables. Most often, you'll work outside as part of a team performing installation, maintenance and repair on facilities that start from outside the Central Office (CO) and stop at the terminal or at a customer's building.

This job may include work on weekends, holidays, standby and unscheduled hours, and overtime.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Work with Aerial and Underground OSP Construction Crews
  • Perform labor intensive work as required to support Aerial and Underground OSP Construction
  • Fill out paperwork as required
  • Flexibility to work across all divisions (underground and aerial)
  • Willing to work outside in varying weather conditions
  • Performs other duties as requested by crew foreman
  • Keep detailed record of work activity
  • Work with hand tools

  • High school diploma or GED, technical or college degree preferred

  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 70 pounds; participate in group lifts for 50 pounds. Carry objects weighing up to 70 pounds for short distances.
  • Work shifts longer than eight hours in duration
  • Push or pull heavy objects into position and apply muscular force quickly to objects and equipment
  • Distinguish between colors
  • Work in a noisy environment
