Christ Church Episcopal School is Hiring a Lower School Chaplain Near Greenville, SC

The chaplain’s duties are diverse and are colored by the individual’s particular gifts and the changing needs of the community. As a result, the position changes from year to year, but generally falls within these areas:

Worship

  • Plan, conduct, and oversee weekly chapel services and morning prayer services.
  • Collaborate with chaplains, students, faculty, staff, and administration to create and conduct chapel services and special services and events, e.g: Convocation, Christmas, Easter, Episcopal School Sunday, Commencement and other special divisional services and events.
  • Steward and model our school community’s Epsicopal identity by teaching and living NAES’s four pillars: Worship, Religious Education, Social Justice, & Relationships.
  • Promote the spirit of Christ’s love in the school and beyond the school.

Academic Instruction & Leadership

  • Maintain the continuing development of the religion curriculum for Primer - Fourth Grades.
  • Teach year-long Christian Education classes to Primer - Fourth Grades.
  • Attend faculty meetings, all-school events, division events, curriculum meetings, chaplain’s meetings, professional development, etc.
  • Attend biennial NAES conference and utilize NAES resources.
  • Participate in and support Service Learning experiences.
  • Participate in International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.

Pastoral Care

  • Provide pastoral care for students, families, faculty, and staff of all faiths, including pastoral needs that may develop on weekends, evenings, or early mornings.
  • Provide a personal, visible, engaged presence – “see and be seen.”
  • Gather and communicate prayer concerns with members of the community.
  • Attend Lower School Student Wellness meetings and collaborate accordingly with colleagues in support of students.
  • Partner with the Lower School Counselor to care for individual student needs and community needs.
  • Attend conferences with administrators, staff, and faculty, as needed, concerning students with social, academic, or personal challenges.
  • Address community issues as appropriate: for example, alcohol and drugs, parenting, child abuse, and safety.

Administration

  • Collaborate and meet regularly with other division chaplains.
  • Meet with Division Head and administrative team on a regular basis.
  • Help anchor all institutional decisions and policies in our Epsicopal identity.
  • Partner with school administration to strengthen our school’s commitment to inclusion and belonging.
  • Other administrative duties including strategic plan, task forces, retreats, Religious LifeCommittee, etc.
  • Communicate religious life events and opportunities with CCES community.
  • Take an active role in supervisory responsibilities i.e., carpool, lunchroom, student projects, etc.
  • Attend student performances, athletic competitions, and parent meetings.
  • Report to Senior Chaplain and Head of the Lower School.
  • Help care for and keep the Chapel of the Good Shepherd maintained, organized, and orderly to preserve sacred space.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ordained Episcopal priest or lay Episcopalian with a Masters of Divinity preferred or equivalent degree.
  • Mature and personal faith in Jesus Christ who feel called to Epsicopal school chaplaincy, especially with elementary students.
  • Equipped to serve a pluralistic community and who are responsible to everyone, regardless of faith, sex, race, color, national or ethnic origin, and sexual orientation.
  • Candidates with classroom teaching experience preferred.
  • High energy and a creative spirit, who has pastoral, pedagogical, and liturgical skills.
  • Relates well to young people as well as adult faculty and parents.
  • Effective in a classroom setting and chapel as well as in pastoral situations within a school environment.
  • Qualified, through experience and study, to teach Lower School classes in both the Old Testament and New Testament.
  • Maintain and model healthy boundaries in the school community.
  • Champion for our Baptismal Covenant, someone who will “strive for justice and peace among all people” and “respect the dignity of every human being.”
