Assistant Technical Director
Position Description
As a member of the Christ Church Episcopal School performing arts center staff the Assistant Technical Director will assist in high-quality execution of production logistics (specializing in lighting and sound) for events, performances, and other activities at the Hartness Performing Arts Center, on campus at CCES, and off-campus in support of arts department activities, should the need arise.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performance and Event Logistics
As directed by the Technical Director and Production Manager, work closely with other production staff and arts department faculty in timely execution of production logistics and operations including load-in, setup, operation, changeover, tear-down, and load-out of stage equipment (including staging, lighting, audio, video systems, seating and equipment for orchestra/band/choir) for rehearsals, events, and performances for both CCES and external/rental clients and partners held at the Hartness Performing Arts Center.
As directed by the Technical Director and Production Manager, assist in all lighting hang and focus, programming, and other lighting/electrics service needed; serve as light board programmer/operator for selected productions and events; operate followspots as necessary.
Must be willing and able to work at night and weekends for CCES events and occasional rental events booked in The Hartness Performing Arts Center.
Scenic Carpentry
Lead and execute the set construction for (3) CCES performing arts department productions each year and with other scenic projects as necessary.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to draft working drawings from set renderings.
Candidates must have a mastery of set construction principles and the ability to safely and independently use power and hand tools.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance
As directed by the Technical Director and Production Manager, assist in the regular maintenance and operation of all lighting, sound, and construction equipment within the Hartness Performing Arts Center.
Administrative/Other Duties
Participate in regular departmental and other production meetings.
Assist in other departmental projects and support other team members as necessary and required.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in show production or another related field; minimum of one to three years of relevant experience at an event production company, music school, orchestra, touring company or other performing arts organization; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Advanced knowledge and demonstrated skill with theatrical scenic construction and scenic design.
Able to operate a Yamaha CL5 sound board.
Able to operate an ETC Ion light board.
Ability to manage wireless mics along with other sound reinforcement during a show and assemble sound cues for a production.
Knowledge of Q-lab and other sound cueing systems is preferred.
Vectorworks and Lightwright software, and wireless DMX preferred.
Knowledge of intelligent/moving head fixtures, and LED fixtures and systems preferred.
Basic knowledge of video projection systems, audio equipment and sound reinforcement.
Understanding of theatrical electrical systems and power sources.
General knowledge of performance and event conventions and vocabulary.
Basic knowledge of musical performance conventions and forms.
Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, and Word; experience with the Office 365 suite preferred. Working knowledge of Google Office Suite: Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Forms, etc.
Must exhibit collaborative teamwork; applied problem-solving; ability to work effectively with coworkers
of a diverse group of backgrounds and personalities; ability to accurately express and exchange information in time-sensitive performance situations; ability to assess and determine accurate information for setup of equipment and instruments from diagrams and/or drawing.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
Constantly move, transport, position, and remove items such as chairs, risers, boxes, tables, instruments, audio equipment, lighting instruments, cabling, and other items that may be bulky or heavy (up to 50 pounds); remain in a stationary position for less than 20% of time when actively performing essential job functions.
Regularly ascend and descend stairs and stepladders.
