Job Title: Controller - The Management Group Associates (TMGA)
Location: Germantown, MD
Status: Full-time, exempt
Hours: Flexible work schedule, 4 day (10 hours) or 5 day (8 hours) workweeks, hybrid schedule after 6 months.
Salary Range: $100,000 - $125,000
Job Summary:
As Controller, you are responsible for managing the workflow of all divisions so that everything runs efficiently. In addition, you are responsible for tracking all audits and tax returns for our associations, handling banking for TMGA and all associations, preparing the financials for all new communities and handling a small portfolio yourself, while directly supervising and reviewing the work of all accountants and Accounts Payable. Your expertise in property accounting, budgeting, and financial analysis will contribute significantly to our company's success and growth.
This position reports to the CFO.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Management:
- Manage and supervise day-to-day accounting functions related to property management, including accounts payable/receivable.
- Oversee and ensure accurate and up-to-date financial records for all properties, ensuring completeness and accuracy of financial transactions.
- Implement financial policies, procedures, and controls to safeguard company assets and maintain financial integrity.
- Review the financial statements of the team
- Taxes, Audits, and Other:
- Maintain all tax files and respond to all tax notices received for all associations.
- Train all incoming staff members on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
- Coordinate year end audits, log in tax returns, ensure all are completed timely or an extension is done, review tax returns when complete and get to manager for Board signature.
- Handle the banking for all associations and TMGA.
- Work with the auditors as needed (answering questions, researching, etc.
- Check Accounting compliance with collection law when the compliance chart gets sent out.
- Process the payroll for any associations that have employees- may be assisted by accountants.
- Handle petty cash.
- Attend board meetings as needed.
- Respond to inquiries from Property Managers and association Board members and make appropriate adjustments.
- Review draft and final budgets and letters for associations with help from the CFO as needed. Notify A/P of changes in management fee, reserve contributions, etc.
- Set up all new associations on TOPS, Smartstreet, and Strongroom.
- Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead and mentor a team of 4 Accounting professionals within the property management division, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
- Foster a collaborative and results-oriented work environment, promoting teamwork and accountability among team members.
- Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and technological advancements in property management accounting and finance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in financial management or accounting roles, preferably within the real estate or property management industry.
- Strong knowledge of property accounting principles, lease agreements, and real estate financial analysis.
- Proficiency in financial software.
- Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to interpret financial data accurately.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate financial information effectively to non-financial stakeholders.
- Leadership experience, including managing teams and driving financial performance and operational excellence.
