Choate Rosemary Hall is a highly selective, co-educational boarding school dedicated to transformative student experiences. Drawing on over 130 years as a demonstrated leader in education, Choate has moved with confidence into the 21st century, integrating innovation with traditional strengths. Choate invites applications, nominations, and inquiries as it embarks upon a search for its next Medical Director.

Reporting to the Dean of Students on administrative and clinical issues and to the Dean of Faculty on educational issues connected with the academic curriculum, the Medical Director directs and maintains high-quality medical and surgical care, health advocacy, health education, and psychosocial support to Choate students on a 24-hour per day, 7-day per week basis when school or summer programs are in session, arranging back-up coverage as appropriate. Medical responsibilities include inpatient and outpatient medical care at the Pratt Health Center, performing minor surgical procedures, overseeing the care of students admitted to hospitals or referred to other health care providers, and providing health education and psychosocial support to students during the course of their treatment.

Specifically, the Medical Director will:

  • Maintain professional relationships with local health care organizations and professionals to ensure access to necessary referral and consultative services.
  • Supervise the clinical activities of staff within Health Services to ensure the provision of high-quality care to students.
  • Supervise services by independent practitioners such as nurse practitioners, counselors, and athletic trainers.
  • Collaborate with and render medical support to the on-site health providers, including the counseling team and athletic training team.
  • Serve as the clinical liaison between Health Services staff, other school personnel (such as faculty and administration) and students’ family members, ensuring the communication of up-to-date medical information to appropriate parties.
  • Serve as the primary clinical representative of Health Services to the school community, participating in appropriate internal and external committee assignments and meetings and promoting the image of Health Services to the community through enhanced communication about the nature of services provided and overall philosophy guiding care.
  • Ensure that Health Services meets annual budgetary objectives.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of complete, accurate, and timely student medical records.
  • Approve (and develop as needed) all protocols for patient care and lead the ongoing evaluation of patient care.
  • Serve on a team with the Director of Counseling, Director of Studies, and Dean of Students to evaluate and determine leaves of absence.
  • Serve on a team with the Director of Studies office to determine accommodations for students.
  • Collaborate with the Health and Wellness Coordinator on health education programming and providing guidance and expertise for health and wellness programming for the community.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of short- and long-range plans for Health Services, particularly relating to physical facilities, staffing needs, and new program development, to ensure the continued provision of appropriate and high-quality services to students.
  • In concert with relevant Health Center staff members, develop new clinical programs for the school, particularly in the area of health education and prevention.
  • Maintain professional competency through participation in relevant continuing education activities.

  • Be able to adapt to changes in the work environment, managing competing demands and frequently changing needs or unexpected events.
  • Possess a body of professional knowledge and experience around diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice, as well as a track record of impact and accomplishment in advancing this work.
  • Have experience using Medicat Software.
