Job Overview

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) works as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to provide emergent/urgent patient care in accordance with Children's Hospital Colorado's (CHCO) mission. The EMT functions under the medical direction of the EMS Medical Director and is supervised by the on duty attending physician, advanced practice provider, registered nurse and CHCO leadership within the scope of practices as dictated by Children's Hospital Colorado training, competencies and guidelines.

Hours per week: 24, eligible for benefits
Shift: Night shift (6:45pm - 7:15am)

Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent, and graduation from an accredited/certified Emergency Medical Technician program (one of the following required)
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with IV certification
    • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
    • Paramedic
    • Military/Combat Medic Specialist Training
  • Experience: None required, 1 year experience preferred.
  • Certification(s):
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers and relevant life support certification as determined at position level.
      • BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer or ASHI Basic Life Support for Health Providers with card in-hand before start date. BLS or CPR card must be good through six months from date of hire.
    • State of Colorado Emergency Medical Technician certification required
    • EMTs only - IV Certification required
      • If you are an AEMT, Paramedic, or have completed Military/Combat Medic Specialist training, a separate IV certification is not required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Within scope of job, utilizes critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, using critical thinking skill and decisive judgement within the scope of the role.
  • Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the exam room; providing gowns, drapes and preparing instruments, equipment and necessary supplies.
  • Completes a variety of medical services including verifying patient information; reviewing and updating pertinent medical records; and documenting interventions.
  • Performs medical procedures as delegated including, but not limited to; medication administration, obtaining vital signs, performing CPR, EKGs, splint application, phlebotomy, and IV access.
  • Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to medical/nursing staff.
  • Assists health care providers during examinations; prepares laboratory specimens; performs basic testing; disposes of contaminated supplies and cleans or prepares for sterilization of medical instruments.
  • Assists in balancing workloads, coordinates and maintains clinical flow by coordinating with care providers.
  • Provides standardized education for patients and families through written and verbal instructions and answering questions as directed by the provider.
  • Provides basic airway and respiratory management.
  • Serves as preceptor and mentor to other team members.
  • Adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements and standards of regulatory bodies. Maintains requirements for licensure, certifications and skills maintenance.
  • Cross trains to cover multiple roles within department and/or other CHCO EDs and UCs (e.g. patient watches, covers breaks/shifts for ISS/PFSS).
  • Orders, restocks and manages inventory of medical supplies.
  • Participates in hospital committees, as directed by leadership.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $35,820.24 to $53,730.37
Hourly Salary Range: $17.22 to $25.83
