Chicago Architecture Center is Hiring an Exhibition Preparator Near Chicago, IL

Description

Under direct supervision of the Director of Exhibitions, the Exhibition Preparator will assist with the fabrication, assembly, installation, and maintenance of in-house, traveling and off-site exhibitions for the Chicago Architecture Center. This role’s responsibilities are daily care, upkeep, and repair of exhibit components, as well as coordination with outside vendors and internal staff. Ideal candidates will possess a working knowledge of accepted museum/gallery standards of exhibit preparation, maintenance, and construction. Proficiency in the use of basic carpentry tools and equipment, wall repair and painting, basic electrical and data wiring, and A/V interfaces are preferred.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Have demonstrated knowledge of art, object handling procedures and best practices. 
  • Ensure a safe and proper working order/functionality of all exhibits.
  • Lead installation and de-installation of exhibitions, including assembly, maintenance, and repair needs.
  • Coordinate, supervise and support exhibit-related vendors.
  • Develop and maintain a clean and safe in-house and/or remote workshop; assure tools and equipment are in good condition; operate tools and machinery as needed.
  • Organize, maintain, and catalog exhibit components in storage areas.
  • Use lift equipment including freight elevators, scissor-lifts, and pallet jacks.
  • Assist with light engineering, design of exhibition components and placement of exhibit fixtures.
  • Maintain and update painted surfaces throughout the galleries.
  • Clean existing exhibits and displays.
  • Build prototypes, samples, and models.
  • Maintain records and draft reports, as necessary.
  • Participate in departmental and project-related meetings.
  • Occasionally assist the Facilities Department with Center-related needs.
  • Perform other duties as needed by the Director of Exhibitions.

Requirements

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledgeable in the use of basic carpentry techniques, hand tools, power tools, basic electrical wiring and lighting, paints/adhesives, and associated safety practices.
  • Prior experience in museum/gallery or tradeshow exhibit fabrication a plus.
  • Expertise in welding, woodworking, or replication is essential.
  • Basic understanding of audio-visual equipment, with the ability to learn the operation and maintenance of specialized A/V systems.
  • Able to use mechanical drawings, schematics, and product manuals towards repair and maintenance of exhibit components.
  • Experience working with a variety of materials, such as wood, metals, and plastics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Flexibility and a collaborative attitude to adapt to schedule and organizational changes, and unforeseeable circumstances that arise.
  • Must be highly organized and meticulous, with strong follow-through and ability to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is required; BA, equivalent experience or formal training is desired.
  • At least two years of experience in a museum, fine gallery, or industrial shop, is preferred.
  • A valid IL driver's license is required, in addition to a safe driving record.
  • Must demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time; walking and lifting are also required.
