General Definition of Work

The Curriculum Specialist, under moderate supervision, performs intermediate level work with limited decision-making discretion designing, implementing, and continuously improving educational curriculum content while aligning to state standards. This position will monitor state requirements and support the instructional specialists by creating professional learning content and materials.Employee performs school based and district level work to carry out Board of Education policies and procedures as an expert curriculum specialist under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Data and Governance.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and educators to develop comprehensive curriculum materials for various academic subjects and grade levels
  • Conduct research to identify best practices, emerging trends, and innovative approaches to curriculum development
  • Design curriculum frameworks, scope and sequence documents, lesson plans, assessments, and instructional resources that align with educational standards and learning objectives
  • Apply principles of instructional design to create engaging and interactive learning experiences
  • Incorporate multimedia, technology-enhanced learning tools, and other resources to support diverse learning styles and preferences
  • Develop instructional strategies, activities, and assessments that promote active learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Implement training and support systems with educators on curriculum implementation, instructional strategies, and assessment techniques
  • Facilitate workshops, seminars, and professional learning communities to enhance educators' pedagogical skills and content knowledge
  • Collaborate with school leaders to identify professional development needs and tailor training programs accordingly
  • Collaborate with other district stakeholders to develop cohesive professional learning content aligned to the district strategic plan
  • Collect and analyze data on curriculum effectiveness, student learning outcomes, and teacher feedback
  • Use assessment data to identify areas for improvement and revise curriculum materials
  • Stay informed about changes in educational standards, curriculum frameworks, and assessment practices, and update curriculum documents accordingly
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and community members to gather input and feedback on curriculum initiatives
  • Build positive relationships with stakeholders and foster a collaborative culture focused on continuous improvement
  • Communicate effectively with diverse audiences to articulate the rationale, goals, and benefits of curriculum changes and instructional practices
  • Facilitate professional development and attend other related meetings as needed/required
  • Participate in professional development workshops and leadership training
  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Comprehensive in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of public school system policies
  • Comprehensive knowledge of educational standards, pedagogical theories, and best practices in teaching and learning
  • Comprehensive knowledge of staff development practices, procedures, and techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge on how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with instructional technology tools, learning management systems, and multimedia resources
  • Knowledge of and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in curriculum design and implementation
  • Skilled in the use of current software to include word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing applications
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement
  • Ability to develop related charts, graphs, reports, and records pertaining to school planning and strategy
  • Ability to conceptualize, initiate, monitor, and evaluate new and/or current programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Valid NC teaching license required
  • School administrator license or Master's degree in Education or related area preferred
  • Minimum of Five (5) years' experience in curriculum development, instructional design, or educational leadership required
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education

Special Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
