Position: Juvenile Probation Officer
Department: 7th Probate District Court
Pay Range: Full-time with benefits, starting hourly wage: $22.68

Position Summary
To assist juveniles and their families in completing and complying with probation terms and orders of the court. To provide counseling, interventions, and coordination of services in an effort to keep delinquent youth in their homes, as opposed to out-of-home placements, taking into account the safety and the best interests of the juvenile and the community.

Essential Functions

  • Counsels juveniles and families in order to identify and resolve barriers to the juvenile’s success on probation and after. Coordinates services as needed. May encounter highly charged, emotional situations with the potential of physical risks.
  • Investigates background of juveniles and families to identify source and to develop goals and objective for change, ultimately making better choices and following the law.
  • Consults face-to-face at least weekly with juveniles and their families, and regularly with school, police, therapists, community agencies, and other professionals to monitor progress of the juvenile and their families. This involves going to the homes of the juveniles and their parents, school, therapy, and/or community services. This may also involve attending school meetings, such as IEP or behavior plan meetings.
  • Routinely and randomly drug screen juveniles as ordered, up to daily screening. This may be evening and weekend hours.
  • Facilitates and monitors groups during or after work hours. This may require obtaining requisite certifications.
  • Assists at the court school program, Round Lake High School, as needed. This may include searches, groups, attending off-campus group activities, covering classrooms, the lunchroom, or the transition room.
  • Transports juveniles to and from home, school, and appointments, etc.
  • Documents necessary information through ongoing case notes/records and reports to meet State and in-home care requirements. May also include utilizing state computer systems and programs.
  • Participates in pre-trial hearings, preliminary hearings, plea and disposition hearings, show cause hearings, probation violation hearings, and review hearings. Testifies at court hearings.
  • Investigates, secures, and arranges placements in detention, foster care, or residential settings and required transportation.
  • Creates comprehensive detailed reports for court at initial plea/disposition, probation violation or show cause hearings, and review hearings.
  • Attends seminars and meetings to stay current on juvenile law and new and innovative intervention techniques for juveniles and families. Attends trainings for certifications required for drug screening, facilitating groups, and utilizing GPS, and other monitoring systems.
  • If designated as “on-call,” responds to after-hours delinquency and protective calls. Facilitates de- escalation of juveniles and families and arranges placements, including emergency placement of juveniles in detention.
  • Attends activities with juveniles, such as community service work sites, and physical activities such as hiking or walking.
  • Conducts initial screenings such as JASAE, MJJAS, YLS, or any other instrument used by the court.
  • Performs other reasonable duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries
  • Provide detailed court reports and effective testimony

Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice, psychology, or related field. Probation experience preferred.

Required Certification or Licensure
Must be willing to comply with the Model Code of Conduct for Michigan Trial Court Employees.
Must have or be willing to obtain Michigan In-Home Care Worker certification.
Valid Michigan driver’s license.
