Description

The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, located in Rockville, MD, seeks qualified candidates for the position of Staff Accountant - Endowment Specialist , a full-time position reporting to the Controller.

The Staff Accountant is responsible for entering information into a variety of financial systems, ensuring that accounting principles and procedures are followed and applied in recording financial information, analysis of financial data, and ensuring that appropriate internal control procedures are followed. In addition, the Staff Accountant oversees and ensures the accuracy of endowments, accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Essential Duties: 

• Record payroll into the accounting system and ensure accurate labor allocations are reflected in organizational financial statements.  
• Prepare standard and complex payroll journal entries and reconcile all payroll general ledger accounts ensuring adherence to GAAP. 
• Reconcile Flex Bank Account for Controller review. 
• Support preparation of fiscal and calendar year end accruals and tax forms. 
• Review invoices submitted in the accounts payable software checking them for accuracy, proper approvals, and budget coding. 
• Reconcile vendor statements and follow up on discrepancies. 
• Respond to inquiries from staff regarding their budgets. 

• Record adjusting journal entries as needed. 
• Maintain W9s for vendors and produce 1099s annually. 
• Responsible for depositing checks and miscellaneous cash. 
• Reconcile the School commercial credit card liability account and follow up on un-submitted charges with cardholders.  
• Oversee and ensure the accuracy of endowments, collaborating with the Development team to manage and monitor the endowment funds effectively.
• Prepare regular reports on endowments.
• Provide customer support to internal and external constituents related to the business office.

Qualifications

• College degree with a major in accounting.
• Excellent problem solving/judgement skills and a high level of attention to detail. 
• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal and a high-level of interpersonal skills. 
• Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies. 
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and advanced skills in Excel required. 
• Proficiency preferred with accounting software, Sage Intacct, Rraizer’s Edge and accounts payable software, BILL.com

Work Environment 

The Staff Accountant is expected to work onsite at our Lower School campus in Rockville, MD. Employees may be asked to perform some of their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, employees are required to maintain a professional environment.
