Zoning Technician

The Champaign County Department of Planning and Zoning seeks to fill the position of Zoning Technician. Responsibilities include receiving phone calls and staffing the service counter; answering in-person, telephone, and email inquiries from the public; referring major inquiries to other appropriate personnel; intake and preliminary review of all Zoning Use Permits and Special Flood Hazard Area Development Permits issued by the Department; assessing application fees and processing application fee receipts; obtaining documents and data as required for review and approval of all permits; preparing Zoning Use Permits, Floodplain Development Permits, Zoning Compliance Certificates, and other miscellaneous permit documents for signature by the Zoning Administrator, including a recommendation regarding approval; maintaining the files for all permits; conducting straight forward zoning compliance field inspections and preparing Zoning Compliance Certificates for signature by the Zoning Administrator; receiving complaints in the absence of the Zoning Officer; compiling information about zoning in related enforcement cases; assisting with the processing of the zoning related parts of Recreation and Entertainment Licenses and Liquor Licenses; helping prepare Zoning Board of Appeal (ZBA) meeting Agendas; assisting with mailings of ZBA meeting materials; and attending all ZBA night meetings and transcribing ZBA meeting minutes; maintaining the official files of all land use regulations and ordinances; maintaining the records of fee revenues and making deposits in a timely manner; and preparing requisitions for payment of department debits.

Requires an Associate’s Degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school in building construction, architecture, or related field plus a minimum of 3 years of work experience; excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills required; the ability to read plans and maps; valid driver’s license and vehicle required; and experience with Word, Excel, and ArcGIS is desirable. 

The annual salary starts at $34,008. with minimum requirements up to $51,012. DOQ and includes a competitive benefits package.
