Position: Field Training Officer - EMT

Summary:
A Field Training Officer (FTO) is an experienced or senior member of our organization who is responsible for the training of a probationary level field employee as well as non-probationary level field employees. EMS requires extensive training beyond what is taught in a classroom setting. These men and women are our chosen tools to accomplish this task successfully. Employees hired into this position are subject to a six month introductory probationary period.
The duties of the FTO are vast. They involve being a role model, teaching the field employee the policies of the company, teaching the employee how to correctly apply the concepts they learned in the classroom to field operations, and evaluating the employee on his or her progress in the program. New field employees will be expected to work with an FTO for a pre-determined amount of time, or until the FTO, in coordination with the administrative staff, determines that they are ready to work on their own.
FTO’s will be next in-line for promotional opportunities and will receive all the training opportunities as a shift supervisor. In the absence of the shift supervisor the FTO will fill in as the Shift Lieutenant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensures the proper training and instruction of new employees ensuring adherence to Central EMS policies, procedures, guidelines, directives and standards
  • Responsible for remedial evaluations/training of current employees
  • Responsible for reviewing of patient care reports ensuring that medical protocols are followed
  • Responsible for being involved in patient care protocol reviews and updates
  • Responsible for ensuring completion of daily, weekly and monthly unit check offs.
  • Ensures unit and crew members adhere to Central EMS policies, procedures, guidelines, directives and standards. Reports any deficiencies to the shift supervisor or Director of Operations.
  • Maintain a state of readiness and professionalism while on-duty.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and conduct while in company uniform either on or off duty.
  • Self-motivated and requires little supervision and direction.
  • Responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of stations and proper techniques are used when cleaning vehicles
  • Performs other such duties as may be required
Minimum FTO Qualifications:
  • EVOC or equivalent instructor certification (within 1 year)
  • WMD TERT certification or equivalent certification approved by Director of Operations (within 1 year)
  • Successful completion of a written exam
  • Successful completion of panel interview
  • Successful completion of application process to include recommendation letter (from a supervisor)
  • Sponsorship from a current FTO (if available)
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of company Standard Operating Procedures and Policies
  • Knowledge of company medical director approved Protocols
  • Knowledge of local area and ability to read and interpret local maps.
Ability:
  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand medical terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports, and correspondence.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information and respond to questions regarding patient care, Central EMS operations and other customer service issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize personal computer systems including PCR reporting, email and MDT applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize basic computer skills including MS Office
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, motivate, and train subordinates effectively through positive attitude and compassion
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate at all levels, both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to represent Central EMS and other team members as an EMS professional.
Requirements:
  • National Registry (must have or acquire National Registry within 1 year of becoming FTO)
  • Required to attend meetings
  • Required to cross train as an Operations Supervisor
  • Required to maintain a flexible schedule for different shift deployments
  • Required to have no more than 2 disciplinary written warnings in the past 6 months
  • Required to maintain a minimum certification of EMT/Paramedic.
  • Required to attend all training classes relevant to field supervision
  • Prompt and regular attendance at work and mandatory meetings
