Centers For New Horizons, Inc. is Hiring a Street Outreach Worker Near Chicago, IL

Position Title: Street Outreach Worker FLSA Code: Exempt
Department: Violence Prevention & Intervention Report to: Program Manager
Position Overview
Founded in 1971, Centers for New Horizons, Inc. (Centers) is a nonprofit organization that assists children, youth, and families to become self-reliant. With 200 full-time staff, most of whom live in or near its service communities, Centers provides programs in seven locations throughout the Bronzeville and Riverdale communities of Chicago's Southside that reach over 1,000 individuals daily.
Position Description
This position will engage potential perpetrators and victims within the community assessing possible incidents and needs. They will build and strengthen existing community relationships to foster rapport with residents for the purpose of establishing a strong presence within the community. This position will also establish a presence in what are considered common spaces within the neighborhood such as street corners, parks, businesses and schools to introduce our services, assist the community in promoting safety and reclaiming these spaces for positive public use.
Essential Functions
  • Form relationships with the highest risk persons in the community, as well as the people who know them.
  • Work to intervene in circumstances in which gun violence is likely, including possible retaliation.
  • Conduct outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups.
  • Provide clients with support and linkages to programs and opportunities in the community (e.g., job programs, GED, drug treatment, and mentoring).
  • Participate, as necessary, in organizing responses to shootings and increasing visibility when shootings/killings take place.
  • Research causes of shootings/killings to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups (e.g., working with the community, outreach programs and local law enforcement to gain information that may be helpful in preventing additional killings).
  • Work with community partners to identify and diffuse “hot spots” for shootings and violence.
  • Attend and help facilitate and plan community events and shooting responses.
  • Document all work including shootings and other acts of violence prevented, case notes, referrals, and changes in participant’s status.
  • Attend all mandatory program trainings.
  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings and other team meetings as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Violence Prevention and Intervention.
QUALIFICATIONS: (Knowledge, Experience & Abilities)
  • An in-depth knowledge of the Grand Boulevard (Bronzeville) and other Chicago South Side Communities. Resident of Grand Boulevard/Bronzeville highly preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge of at-risk youth and gang involvement preferred.
  • Able to walk 30 blocks
  • Committed to working toward positive community change
  • Able to pass drug screening
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends and holidays. Position requires evening, late night, and weekend hours.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Personal attributes such as professionalism, commitment to self-improvement and development, friendliness, tact, enthusiasm, creativity, sensitivity, sense of humor, and honesty.
  • Valid driver’s license and current automobile insurance is required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
