Position Overview: Abstract and code all malignant cases and reportable benign reportable cases diagnosed and/or treated at Cayuga Medical Center. This includes all pathology, cytology, and clinically diagnosed cases. Identifies potential new cases and provides lifetime follow-up within the requirements of the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and the NYS DOH.

What you'll do:

  • *Case finding: Reviews source documents to determine reportability, determine single vs. multiple primaries and histology.
  • *Abstracting/Coding: Analyzes medical records source documents to determine primary site, stage, treatment, primary cancer characteristics. Records pertinent information in text and coded form for all reportable cases diagnosed and/or treated at CMC.
  • *Follow-up: Completes lifetime follow-up within CoC requirements.
  • *Information management: Accurately uses Meditech and ARIA EMR to retrieve patient data, accurately enters patient data into the ERS database.
  • *Data quality assurance: Quality control of cancer registry data; visual review of abstracts, edit checks, continual review of processes to ensure accuracy, and reviews state/national data rules and regulations for program compliance.
  • *Information management: Accurately enters patient data into the ERS database.
  • *Participates in other oncology activities to facilitate the goals of the cancer
  • *Is flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies governing release of information, use of medical records and research and NYS reporting requirements.
  • Safeguards for maintaining confidentiality of protected health information.
  • Knowledge of guidelines for reportable case identification; active and passive case finding methods and sources; staging systems and their use; diagnostic and staging procedures; prognostic indicators; specialty lab testing methods; types and characteristics of cancer; medical terminology; multiple primary/histology rules; hematopoietic and lymphoid rules; human anatomy and physiology.
  • Education: Successful completion and continued educational maintenance of CTR per NYS DOH and CoC regulations.
  • Experience: Minimum (1) year in a hospital-based cancer registry.

  • Physical Requirements: Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., typing, use of computer and keyboard).
