ST. MARY’S DELL RAPIDS DIRECTOR OF MUSIC LITURGY

Position Category: MINISTERIAL EXEMPT

Location: DELL RAPIDS, SD – PASTORATE #9

General Introduction:

St. Mary Catholic Church located at 608 E. 8th St. Dell Rapids, SD is seeking to hire a full-time Director of Music Liturgy. The Director of Music Liturgy is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the parish's liturgical life. This person, a professional who holds specialized credentials in music and has a thorough understanding of Roman Catholic liturgy, serves the parish as principal musician, organist and choir director according to the highest professional standards established by this profession. This person of faith is responsible for the effective planning, coordination, and execution of both the rituals and music for parish liturgies.
The Director of Music Liturgy is responsible for ensuring quality liturgical celebrations and music that enhance the "full, conscious, active participation of the faithful" of St. Mary Catholic Church.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Function as principal organist and choir director.
  • Collaborate with the pastor, parochial vicar, and with other members of the parish staff, integrating his or her own area of responsibility with the overall parish mission.
  • Prepare and manage the budgets of the liturgy, and music department in collaboration with the Business Manager and the pastor.
  • Provide music and musicians for all Saturday, Sunday, and other major celebrations, including weddings, funerals, Advent vespers, Lenten vespers, first reconciliation, etc.
  • Build repertoire and encourage participation of parish community in singing at various liturgies.
  • Consult on music with parishioners preparing for sacramental liturgies, e.g., Weddings, Funerals, etc.
  • Train, direct, supervise and expand choirs, ensembles and volunteer cantors, etc. in accord with parish evangelization efforts.
  • Coordinate the Mass schedules between the choirs and ensembles.
  • Serve as a resource regarding music, helping to educate staff, ministers of music, and congregation in developing their potentials to understand the role of music in worship and to celebrate liturgies of musical quality.
  • Ensure that all details regarding the liturgical life of the parish are properly planned, thoroughly prepared and skillfully executed.
  • Select and develop participation aids for the congregation.
  • Collaborate as needed with other staff members on the preparation of prayer services and devotions.
  • Keep abreast of developments in sacramental theology, liturgy, the requirements of Canon Law, and update the parish on these matters.
  • Work to foster unity among all parish musicians, and to create a spirit of harmony with the presider and other liturgical ministers.

Essential Qualifications

Primary: 

  • Practicing Roman Catholic who possesses sound knowledge of the Catholic faith and of the Church hierarchy.
  • Willingness and ability to effectively make known the Catholic Church’s teachings and the Bishop’s Diocesan Vision through the varied ministry activities expected of this position.
  • Willingness and ability to act as a personal witness to the Catholic faith and religion by living both one’s professional and personal life in accordance with the doctrines and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, as embodied in the various documents of the Roman Catholic Church, including, without limitation, the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Music, or another related field is required.
  • A Master’s Degree in Music or other related field or at least four years of Catholic Parish Experience is preferred.

Other Elements:

  • Baptized, Confirmed and active Catholic required.
  • Understanding and commitment to live the Vision of being a lifelong Catholic missionary disciple through God’s love.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge in MS Office products.
  • Professional working attitude and collaborative approach.
  • In-depth knowledge of Church documents that govern and direct liturgy and sacred music.
  • Skill as an effective choral conductor as demonstrated by formal credentials and/or a choral audition (rehearsal).
  • Ability and desire to lead and sustain a program of quality congregational singing.
  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees and volunteers
  • Able to honor and maintain confidentiality
  • Strong computer skills
