Catholic Diocese of Lansing is Hiring an Accountant Near Fenton, MI

St. John the Evangelist Parish in Fenton is now accepting resumes for an accountant. This position is non-exempt and can be part-time or full-time.
This position is dedicated to safeguarding the integrity of our financial records by recording, verifying, consolidating, and accurately entering transactions to produce precise and timely financial documents for the church and school. The incumbent directs these efforts with technical expertise within a framework of shared ministry and Catholic values.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Checks invoices for accuracy; prepares checks for signature, EFT, and ACH payments for approval.
  • Develops and maintains all accounting records and files.
  • Pays all debts on time, without incurring late fees. Takes advantage of available discounts.
  • Prepares journal entries and maintains general ledger accounts using double entry bookkeeping in an accrual accounting system.
  • Prepares and analyzes financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, and statement of cash flows), and account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data for month-end and year-end reports. Attends Finance Council meetings to ensure open lines of communication between parish staff and committee.
  • Monitors and maintains bank and credit card balances.
  • Assists with the preparation of budgets. Provides monthly and annual budget information and analysis to church, school, and ministry personnel as needed.
  • Stays abreast of all Michigan laws, rules, policies regarding gaming and withholding for fundraising activities. Responsible for filing all normal and customary IRS and State tax returns.
  • Process payroll and all required withholding taxes and reports.
  • Maintains and monitors staff use of available leave times.
  • Stays abreast of available employee benefits, policies outlined in the Employee Handbook. Communicates updates to staff.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of internal controls and efficiencies in accounting systems and procedures, recommending and implementing improvements, as necessary.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with GAAP, civil laws, Federal and State regulations and Diocesan policies or procedures.
  • Assists in responding to compliance reviews and assessments.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to support business initiatives.
  • Assists with the preparation of reports for special projects.
  • Performs special duties as assigned the Operations Manager or Pastor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field

Experience: Minimum of three years experience with accrual accounting practices, office procedures, and business etiquette. Proficient in financial accounting software, MS Excel, and Word. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Require: Must be a practicing Catholic, active in a parish. Must be able to maintain confidential information. Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with varying audiences.
Physical Demands: While performing duties, employee must sit for prolonged periods of time, use hands in repetitive motion tasks, and answer telephone calls. The position also requires some standing, stooping, and bending while filing. Employee is expected to work onsite, with minimum travel.
